Five Funny Little Moments #20: Ties That Bind
Hm, I found this episode more sad than funny, though, of course, interesting. Ares is terrible. :”) *still strongly considering starting FILM (“Five Interesting Little Moments”) posts too* Hmm…
.
Gabrielle striking again with her oddly lawbreaking ways (and confidence therein). How exactly did a little Potidaean farm girl who only ever read place names learn how to lie on the spot, steal from rich princes and the king of thieves (without either or Xena noticing), smuggle weapons into death-camp prisons, and pick locks so well? What an interesting widdle wabbit.
She’s not a very good protector yet, though. Look at how she “saves” Rhea from a nearby sword fight. (Not to mention, what was she doing while “Atrius” was being nearly beaten to death? Huh.)
Even more off her game this episode is Xena! How is it that she can sense Ares even when he’s lurking several feet away from her ± up a tree behind her but not while in close contact with him? She doesn’t even do her usual shiver in response to his presence once. Later, she gets played by her transparent little buddy of all people and is none the wiser even a little bit. So strange… (Another thing that’s strange to me is how much Xena continually trying to abandon Gabrielle in later seasons annoyed me while I didn’t give much thought to Gabrielle doing it to Xena first! Huh!)
And while Xena is not quite herself this day, Gabrielle is suddenly not herself at all. (The obviousness of stunt doubles has shown up for her, Xena, and other characters before this moment, but this is the most blatant thus far, and the most inexplicable. The girls are walking toward the camera on a wide-open forest path in bright sunlight and then turning and running. Why is this not Ren? X”D Who>What is this creature???)
Naturally, all this weirdness perturbs Argo who presumably knows what’s going on but doesn’t know what to do about it. Poor pony! I mean, veteran warhorse! X’P
