This small collection of musket balls, "quilted" or wrapped in burlap and twine netting with wooden ends, was a deadly package. It could be used at short range and was designed to incapacitate as many of an enemy ship's crew as possible. Loaded into a small rail-mounted gun, the quilted or sewn cloth disintegrated when fired, scattering the shotgun pellets much like a modern shotgun. And served to decimate the opponent's crew.

A grapeshot is a type of ammunition that consists of a collection of smaller-caliber round shots packed tightly in a canvas bag and separated from the gunpowder charge by a metal wadding, rather than being a single solid projectile. When assembled, the shot resembled a cluster of grapes, hence the name. Grapeshot was used both on land and at sea. On firing, the canvas wrapping disintegrates and the contained balls scatter out from the muzzle, giving a ballistic effect similar to a giant shotgun.

Wads for guns, before 1718

Wadding was part of a cannon charge, with one wad in front and one behind the projectile (often a cannonball). This served to trap the gases as the lit gunpowder burned, increasing the energy produced when the cannon fired. The front plug stabilised the projectile as it travelled down the barrel of the cannon. In 1627 wads were made of okum, old clouts or straw and from the 18th century they became old rope, hay and other materials assembled by the gunner.

The wads here were made from coiled rope or textiles found at Queen Anne's Revenge and have survived in the bores of the loaded guns.

Bar shots

This ammunition shown here was typical during the Age of Sails, especially from the 17th to the 19th century.

The bar shot was mostly a shot of two hemispheres, connected with a bar. This type of ammunition was used to damage the mast, sails or rigging. Immediately behind this is an extended bar shot. This was like a bar shot, except that it expanded during firing and could inflict even more damage. Below this is a bar shot consisting of two whole balls. This is also shown by the two single balls where only the bar is missing. However, this munition had the disadvantage that if it was fired from too far away, it no longer hit properly. Therefore, it was used more at short range.
