Taking a sailing class,

And today, one of the other dinghies cut right in front of ours' directly across the bow. Not close enough for there to be any real risk of collision, and if there had been they'd have been worse off getting hit side on than us hitting them head on.

But the 18th century sea captain that lives in my brain immediately went: "Oh good maneuver, they crossed the T perfectly," and then "Damn, they were in perfect position to rake us with a broadside."

Cannonballs are not designed to explode or cause anything to explode

To be clear, these are normal cannonballs measured in pdr and not special types such as the hot ball etc. These balls were designed to act like an elephant in a china shop at a distance. These balls were designed to act like an elephant in a china shop. They were only supposed to do a lot of damage, and they could do that very well, at an estimated speed of 200m per second, which of course starts to decrease with resistance. Because they didn't just fly straight through, they took everything that came near them with them and was accompanied by a cloud of splinters and fragments flying in all directions. (Of course not all the time, when it no longer hits wood, there are no splinters. Then maybe body parts or other things).

But I can already hear the outcry, wait a minute, but there were ships they have exploded. Yes, that's true, but only because the cannonballs hit the powder chamber and the surrounding area, and there were lanterns hanging there that could then ignite the powder. Or something burning because a lantern fell over and fell into it. And so on, there are many possibilities. But these were lucky hits and not the order of the day.

So cannonballs themselves don't explode.
