The most defining feature of the minotaur in House of Leaves is the fact that he isnt there. Of the three main characters, navidson is in the maze but doesnt know he exists. i just got to page 461 which has a small block of the letter X repeating, and a section in the center which are in bold.
the thing that gets me is that reading the book is what gives the context needed to “read” the image produced. cause its not just a random block of letters. its in the middle of an intense scene and suddenly: you can see what he sees. you learn that translation without knowing you would need it.
