Being the freshman events coordinator, it is my job to create the events for the freshman class. In the upcoming fall 0f 2015, Nazareth College Campus Life will be hosting a scavenger hunt for the freshman class.

Mathilde in the USA

I chose to create my own website to share my feelings about my year abroad and in particular all the travels I was lucky enough to do while I was in the U.S. 

I wanted to share my tips and advice about the cities I visited. Traveling is part of my life since I was a child and I could have not imagine my exchange year abroad without traveling. What do you do in the restroom? Just getting bored while nature does its work? You can do much more than that, as you’ll see on the following website: Write, share and discover, open your eyes. If you are an artist or have something to say, you’ll always find a captive audience in the toilets. 

So join those people who use it, join the audience and have fun!

Blonde hair, boxed braids outrage

You guys are probably not aware, but my birthday is coming up in about a week and I have been going crazy trying to look for a nice fitting dress. I found the perfect shoes, but I’m not sure what type of dress it would go with (who starts from the shoes and work their way up? I’m always so backwards). Anyway, I was also reading hair blogs and watching YouTube videos about different hairstyles that will hopefully inspire me to pick one. People often don’t even recognize me because I tend to change my hairstyle frequently, but that’s honestly because I like to be versatile and I dislike having the same hairstyle for a very long; I get bored easily.

I, then, come across an article that blew me out of the water. The title may not have been very eye catching but “until I actually read why,” I was in disbelief. The article titled “12-year-old Girl’s Hair Causes Outrage, Wait Until You Hear Why” created such uproar on social media, specifically twitter, because people found that this cycling picture of a 12-year-old girl in long blonde boxed braids to be very offensive.

Now, to some, this image may not depict anything wrong with or come off as offensive. But for others this was a matter of “cultural appropriation” as braids are a  “cultural element of black people only.” This girl has received negative backlash, insults, and criticisms for taking a selfie of her long blonde boxed braided hair.  I understand the cultural barriers and characteristics of different cultures that people embrace and hold so dear to them. However, what I don’t understand is why attack this girl for being inspired by another women to change her hairstyle and get boxed braids. Whether extension were added or if the braids were singled, why does it matter that she has them? Hair is universal and people have the freedom to do as they please with their hair. I bet if a celebrity was to do the same, everyone would consider it fashion and trendy.

This article, brought to light the power hair brings to ones perception of themselves and how others view them. What are your thoughts about this?

What I love about Naz

For my communications minor I was required to take a course called Writing for Digital Media. 

It was a perfect course for me because I would love to work for a company and do their social media content. For my final project I am going to interview kids here at Nazareth College who are from all over the world and ask them why they decided to come to Nazareth and what they love most about the school. 

Everyone is different and everyone all came here for different reasons, but we all have one thing in common…we love Nazareth.  

So, for the next month I will post several blogs a week of my findings from my fellow Nazareth peers on this website.

CGI U Documentary

This semester, I was one of the eight students accepted to attend the annual Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) meeting at the University of Miami.

It was my second year attending CGI U so for this documentary I focused on two Nazareth College students who attended CGI U for the first time; Hayley Johnson and Paul Lippert.

My clients are the Center for Civic Engagement and Marketing and Comm department at Nazareth College. This short documentary will be on the naz.edu website in order to promote and educate prospective students, families and current students and faculty about CGI U and the community service opportunities at Nazareth College.

I am demonstrating the communication theories, interviewing, writing and presentation skills I have acquired through the Communication and Media program.

I also used the multimedia and video production skills I've learned through the digital media praxis strand, internships and through the Writing for Digital Media course.

The purpose behind doing a short documentary was to demonstrate the video production skills I've attained as well as create an impact by means of visual storytelling.

Why you should go to Puerto Rico as soon as possible

Besides its beauty...

(El Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico)

and its cool animals...

(an iguana)

and the fact that its home to the Bacardi factory...

(a free Rum Punch just for visiting the factory)

what are some other reasons for visiting the beautiful island of Puerto Rico?

1) Puerto Rico is a common wealth of the United States. This means that you don’t need a passport to get there. This makes the island one of the most exotic destinations one can travel without a passport.

2) Puerto Rico has many tourist attractions. If you stay in the tourist area, like San Juan or another big city, you won’t have to worry about being able to speak Spanish because everyone there will speak English. Also, since tourism creates such a large profit for the island, everyone will be super friendly and want to make your visit as great as possible. 

3) The food... oh my god the food. Just look.

I’m sure you understand by now.

4) You can find beautiful, cheap places to stay. We stay at a place in Arecibo called Canary Castle. It’s less than $1,000 a week and is beyond gorgeous. The back patio has a bar and grill with an infinity pool and hammocks. There is then a walkway down onto our own private section of beach. Puerto Rico is cheap! You just have to know where to look.

5) El Yunque, the national rainforest of Puerto Rico and the only rainforest in the United States- Puerto Rico has beaches for days but whenever you get tired of the salty water and waves, visit El Yunque. You will not be disappointed.

6) The drinking age is 18. I went to Puerto Rico one summer when I was 16 and I didn’t get ID-ed anywhere I went. Not only is the drinking age 18 but also, their “carefree-ness” with alcohol is amazing. The drinks are always strong everywhere you go as well. You will definitely be getting more than what you pay for.

I only gave you six reasons, but ask me about this and I could go on for days. If you haven’t already, make your way to Puerto Rico. It’s an affordable vacation that is sure to leave you wanting to come back at least once a year. There’s great food, exotic animals, friendly people, and no passport required! What else could you possibly want in a vacation?
