When dealing with gender neutral parent names, it came to me that two combinations of the names “mom” and “dad” would be Mad and Dam. When combined we get maddam. Therefore it is appropriate to have your children address you as Maddam as a gender neutral name.

My girlfriend and I talked about the names we might give our kids when we have them and it was very fun!! We want to give them gender neutral name to avoid them feeling stuck in their assigned gender, and we found some that were really cool :)

As much as I love the idea of using a gender neutral/alternative title for nb parents or parents of the same gender, I also think we need to be careful about the words we are using. Like ‘baba,’ for instance, which I’ve seen used both by nb parents and a lesbian couple. Baba is not actually a gender-neutral term at all; it literally means father in several languages, which I think ties into the cultural appropriation aspect of this. We should not be taking terms from other cultures, disregarding the meaning/significance and then repurposing it to fit our own needs. Like I said though, a gender-neutral title for parents is awesome, we just need to consider the cultural significance of the words we choose to use.
