NBA Mock Draft 1.0
*Standings as of 3/21/17
*No lottery performed
#1 Boston Celtics (Via Brooklyn): Jayson Tatum - SF/PF
Tatum’s size (6’8 205) should allow him to slide over to the 4 and provide athleticism at a position Boston desperately needs helps at.
#2 Los Angeles Lakers: Lonzo Ball - PG/SG
Adding another talented combo guard likely means Clarkson will be traded for a big man, rounding out the Lakers starting lineup.
#3 Phoenix Suns: Josh Jackson - SF
This pick likely slides Warren over to the 4, giving Phoenix a scary small ball lineup with elite athleticism.
#4 Orlando Magic: Markelle Fultz - PG/SG
Orlando adds the best shot creator in the draft, likely leading to a much more efficient offense heading into next season.
#5 Philadelphia 76ers: De’Aaron Fox - PG
Despite McConnell’s success, Fox will take over at PG to form a deadly PNR combination with Embiid.
#6 New York Knicks: Frank Ntilikina - PG
Phil Jackson goes international once again and adds a point guard that will likely replace Rose after one season in NYC.
#7 Sacramento Kings: Dennis Smith - PG
With Collison soon to be on the wrong side of 30 (currently 29), Smith looks to become the point guard of the future sooner rather than later.
#8 Minnesota Timberwolves: Jonathan Isaac - SF/PF
The versatile Isaac gives Tom Thibodeau even more flexibility in creating lineups next season.
#9 Sacramento Kings (Via New Orleans): Bam Adebayo - C/PF
Pairing up Adebayo with Dennis Smith Jr. should lead to an exciting new future for Sacramento.
#10 Dallas Mavericks: Isaiah Hartenstein - PF
Dallas drafts another German PF with hopes that he can come anywhere close to as good as Dirk someday.
#11 Charlotte Hornets: Lauri Markkanen - PF
Looking for depth and eventually a replacement at PF, MJ’s talent evaluation skills shouldn’t be in question after this pick.
#12 Portland Trailblazers: Miles Bridges - SF/PF
Portland brings in a low risk, high reward player who can play multiple positions right away.
#13 Chicago Bulls: Malik Monk - SG
With Wade and/Butler’s future with the team, they select Monk, an explosive guard who should show plenty of production in year 1.
#14 Detroit Pistons: Terrance Ferguson - SG
Ferguson should be able to give the Piston’s backcourt a boost right away. He has D League experience which should translate to the NBA quickly.
#15 Denver Nuggets: Marques Bolden - C
Although Jokic is now the franchise player, Denver has no real holes on the roster despite their depth down low, which Bolden will fill nicely.
#16 Miami Heat: Ivan Rabb - PF
With the future of Bosh’s career uncertain, Miami takes Rabb earlier than expected hoping he can be a difference maker right away.
#17 Milwaukee Bucks: Edmond Sumner - SG
Milwaukee adds backcourt depth with a player who won’t need to be a huge role player immediately.
#18 Indiana Pacers: Luke Kennard - SG
The Pacers need a SG who is a better fit to play alongside George, so they take the Duke product whose stock has risen immensely in the last year.
#19 Atlanta Hawks: Donovan Mitchell - SG
This pick allows Bazemore to slide back over to SF, letting Atlanta now focus on becoming a top team in the East.
#20 Portland Trailblazers (Via Memphis from Cleveland and Denver): Justin Patton - C
After signing Ezeli only to have him not play all season due to injury, Patton provides Portland with another young and promising big to play behind Nurkic.
#21 Oklahoma City Thunder: Justin Jackson -SF
This past season, OKC was unable to replace Durant’s scoring from the wing spot. Jackson solves this problem without sacrificing too much on the defensive end.
#22 Toronto Raptors: Harry Giles - PF
With no real holes on the roster, Toronto takes a chance on Giles, hoping he can become a superstar within a few years.
#23 Orlando Magic (Via LA Clippers from Toronto and Milwaukee): Tyler Lydon - PF/SF
Lydon can play either forward spot and will look to help spread the floor while Gordon is off the floor.
#24 Brooklyn Nets (Via Washington): Caleb Swanigan - PF
Swanigan’s huge frame (6’9 250) will help Lopez down low, allowing him to focus more on scoring.
#25 Utah Jazz: Thomas Bryant - C
Bryant likely won’t steal Gobert’s starting spot anytime soon, but he will be able to score down low while still being a solid rim protector.
#26 Brooklyn Nets (Via Boston): Tyler Dorsey - SF/SG
“Mr. March” will look to provide scoring on the wing with Gerald Green’s departure looking more and more likely.
#27 Portland Trailblazers (Via Cleveland): Allonzo Trier - PG/SG
Trier won’t need to play a huge role in Portland’s backcourt, but he should provide valuable minutes off the bench for either Lillard or McCollum.
#28 Los Angeles Lakers (Via Houston): Jonathan Jeanne - C
LAL goes international and adds a center with a high ceiling. He will likely compete with Zubac next season for the starting spot, although Walton hasn’t always been eager to start rookies.
#29 San Antonio Spurs: Cameron Oliver - PF/C
Oliver averaged over 2.5 blocks per game this season, and will help provide rim protection for San Antonio, a big weakness for the Spurs.
#30 Utah Jazz (Via Golden State): Jaron Blossomgame - SF
Utah uses the final pick of the first round as an insurance pick at SF should Hayward decide to leave in free agency this summer.
#31 Atlanta Hawks (Via Brooklyn): Bennie Boatwright - PF
Boatwright will provide minutes off the bench behind Millsap when Ilyasova’s shot isn’t falling.
#32 Orlando Magic (Via LA Lakers): Dillon Brooks - SF/SG
Brooks will give Orlando another option off the bench on the wing with the potential to be an important piece of a Magic team hoping to get back to relevance.
#33 Phoenix Suns: Mathias Lessort - PF/C
The Suns add another international big that can provide rebounding and scoring to a young Phoenix squad.
#34 Orlando Magic: Jalen Brunson - PG
Despite Payton’s success to close the season, Orlando will add Brunson, who led Villanova to a #1 overall seed in the tournament this year.
#35 Sacramento Kings (Via Philadelphia from New Orleans): Melo Trimble - SG/PG
Trimble has been left off a few mock drafts online, but Sacramento likely will look to add more depth to their backcourt.
#36 Sacramento Kings: VJ Beachem - SF
Rudy Gay, Tyreke Evans or both are probably going to get traded before the season starts, so the Kings add Beachem to be a part of their future.
#37 Philadelphia 76ers (Via New York from Toronto): Grayson Allen - PG/SG
Philly gives Allen and his attitude a chance in the second round, hoping he can become the player that was expected to be a lottery pick had he declared for last year’s draft.
#38 Boston Celtics (Via Minnesota from Phoenix): Devin Robinson - SF/PF
The Celtics add another player that can play either forward spot in Robinson, giving Brad Stevens another player to add into his diverse lineups.
#39 New Orleans Pelicans: Josh Hart - SG
The Pelicans need as much talent as they can get on the wings, so they draft one of the best players on one of the best college teams of this season.
#40 Philadelphia 76ers (Via Dallas): Malik Pope - SF
Pope has been seen in many different positions on different mock drafts, but the 76ers take another chance on a player that could grow into a fantastic scorer.
#41 Charlotte Hornets: Lagerald Vick - SG
Being left out of the spotlight playing behind Frank Mason III and Josh Jackson, Vick should surprise many people and become a productive two way player.
#42 Houston Rockets (Via Portland): Deng Adel - SF
Looking for depth behind Ariza, Deng Adel should compliment Houston’s 3 point shooters with his defense, with his size allowing him to guard multiple positions.
#43 New York Knicks (Via Chicago): Dwayne Bacon - SF/SG
Bacon’s ability to play either wing spot should allow for him to earn himself minutes right away on a Knicks team that needs to get better immediately.
#44 Houston Rockets (Via Denver): Kobi Simmons - PG
While Harden’s play since switching over to point has been incredible, Simmons will help with playmaking when The Beard is out of the game.
#45 Philadelphia 76ers (Via Miami from Atlanta): Moses Kingsley - PF
Philadelphia still has a slew of bigs even after trading away Noel, but Kingsley i yet another under the radar player with a high ceiling.
#46 Utah Jazz (Via Detroit): OG Anunoby - SF
Regardless of Hayward’s future, Anunoby has good chance at making the roster with his solid all around game.
#47 Milwaukee Bucks: Jordan Bell - PF
Jabari Parker is fully expected to come back healthy despite a second ACL tear, but Bell has the potential to become a solid player in the right system.
#48 Indiana Pacers: Nigel Hayes - PF
Even though Hayes had 4 good seasons at Wisconsin, he is still slated as a 2nd round pick. Look for him to be a high value player at a low value spot in the draft.
#49 Philadelphia 76ers (Via Atlanta): Monte Morris - SG
Morris’s ability to stretch a defense will give Simmons more room to drive inside when/if they are on the floor together.
#50 Denver Nuggets (Via Memphis from OKC): Rawle Alkins - SG/SF
Alkins will get a chance to prove himself to Denver during the Summer League, but with the current depth the Nuggets have on the wing, it should be interesting to see how it works out for the former Arizona Wildcat.
#51 Denver Nuggets (Via OKC): Rodney Purvis - SG/SF
With their second of two consecutive picks, Denver takes a chance on the UCONN Senior who has occasionally shown flashes of NBA talent.
#52 Phoenix Suns (Via Toronto): Jonathan Motley - PF
Motley doesn’t have the flashy skillset to bump his draft stock, but he is a high energy player who should provide a spark off the bench for Phoenix.
#53 Boston Celtics (Via LA Clippers): Semi Ojeleye - PF/SF
SMU’s early exit in this year’s tournament hurts Ojeleye’s stock, allowing Boston to select yet another “combo forward” late in the 2nd round.
#54 Washington Wizards: Michael Fusek - C
Gortat and Mahinmi aren’t getting any younger, so Washington uses their sole pick in the draft to take a center with a well rounded skillset.
#55 Utah Jazz: Jarret Allen - C
Adding another center will create competition for minutes next season in Utah, but Jarret Allen has a good chance of beating out either Withey or Bryant.
#56 Brooklyn Nets (Via Boston): TJ Leaf - PF
Leaf showed promise even though he received little to no attention at UCLA this season playing behind Lonzo Ball, but he certainly has talent and will have a chance to prove it on a weak Brooklyn roster.
#57 Boston Celtics (Via Cleveland): Amida Brimah - C
The 7-footer has plenty of flaws within his game, but he has shown the potential to be a solid rim protector which the Celtics wouldn’t mind having. He should have a spot atleast on Boston’s Summer League roster, which overall should be very deep.
#58 New York Knicks (Via Houston): Chris Boucher - PF
Boucher has played a big role on an Oregon team looking to make a Final Four run, which should be enough for him to at least get drafted. Whether or not he makes an NBA roster will be interesting to see.
#59 San Antonio Spurs: Frank Mason III - PG
While Dejounte Murray is fully expected to be the PG to replace Parker when the time comes, Mason III could become a solid, Cory Joseph-esque backup seeing that he plays more defense than Patty Mills, their current backup point.
#60 Atlanta Hawks (Via Golden State from Philadelphia): Anzejs Pasecniks - C
