I like how that apprentice person got criticized so she was forced to make a non apology about how “men writing means it’s bad and if you cant accept that then sorry but homer won’t fuck you”
Ah, yes, I got a screenshot of it...
I don’t have personal beef with OP and we agree in many things overall. However, they (mod nba) come from the New World (Argentina) and - I assume - have little touch with the old native religion of their region. If they had grown up with their native mythology they would know that such is the nature of myths worldwide. And they wouldn’t speak like that for another mythology/old religion since they would know how it is to have such a mythology yourself. Idk, just some speculation on my part.
And I think OP has lost the point completely. The point is that we shouldn’t judge old myths with 21 century Abrahamic faith lenses. They are not here to be judged and teach us moral lessons TODAY. Similarly, you can’t be taught by a story talking about how to treat your slave because... we are over that in most societies. Some myths can be teaching, but they obviously come from another era. LO doesn’t work for this exact reason, because Smythe tried to bring an old story to the present - with the present laws and morals applying.
Not to mention... the “bad” things characters do in myths have been used many times to deem a people as savage by foreigners. “Look how barbaric their society are, they have myths were women are raped!“ (even though the society will often have laws against rape). So... I am not a fan of this logic.
And of course myths/old religious stories are not to be interpreted as 100% realistic.
Plus, many people from America says Greek took their culture, myths and gods from the middle east and/or north Africa but when it comes to accusing those myths, suddenly they are 100% Greek :) Oh those evil Greek myths that corrupted the West with the wrong “cultural morals”! As if the West didn’t already have gods and stories with murder, like Westerners didn’t know how to harm their neighbor and pillage before they read Greek myths!
And... the idea that Greek myths somehow inspired societies to be more conservative??? what?? Does OP know that Greeks have been Christians for the last 2.000 years? Oppression and harmful behavior wasn’t eliminated after we switched religions. Not even conservative Greeks were/are inspired by the Greek myths.
They basically insult Greek culture and then they go “if you are insulted by this, what can I say, Homer won’t fuck you“. Yeah because that was DEFINITLY our problem. Well done, you understood our position completely xD
