Lakers vs. Suns: A market-based preview via Kalshi The Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns are set for a Western Conference showdown on Thursday at PHX Arena, with both teams separated by less than three games in the Pacific Division standings. The Lakers sit atop the division and fifth in the Western Conference.
With Los Angeles at 63% implied probability to win and Phoenix at 37%, Kalshi markets show that consensus has the Lakers as the sizable favorite heading into this matchup. Due to injuries sustained by the Suns, two of their top scorers are out: Devin Booker, who is still out with a hip injury, and Dillon Brooks, who is sidelined indefinitely with a broken hand. Phoenix’s short-handed squad going up against a LeBron James and Luka Doncic-led Lakers offense makes Kalshi’s 36% market sentiment on the Suns feel like a fair reflection of their current vulnerabilities.

2025-2026 NBA Season Predictions: GMs Back OKC for a Repeat, Nikola Jokic for MVP, and Erik Spoelstra as the League's Top Bench Boss on the Sports Channel
The annual preseason survey of the NBA's general managers has dropped, offering a fascinating peek into the minds of the league's leading decision-makers ahead of the new season. This is more than just water-cooler talk; it's a genuine gauge of respect and expectation across the NBA landscape. The results point to a familiar powerhouse in the West and some major international star power dominating the individual awards.
The Reigning Champs are Overwhelming Favorites
The Oklahoma City Thunder, fresh off their championship run, are heavily favored to go back-to-back. No team has won consecutive titles since the Golden State Warriors did it nearly a decade ago, but GMs clearly see the Thunder as the team to break that streak. A massive 80% of the vote went to OKC to lift the trophy this season, dwarfing the 7% each received by Cleveland and Denver. This vote is a huge endorsement of their young core and the structure put in place by their front office. In a league designed for parity, the level of confidence in the Thunder's repeat bid is truly astounding.
When it comes to the Western Conference playoff picture, GMs predict an OKC-led top four, with Denver, Houston, and Minnesota following in order. The East is expected to be led by Cleveland, then New York, Orlando, and Atlanta.
The MVP Race: A Rocky Mountain of International Talent
The MVP trophy is expected to stay in the hands of an international star. In what would be his fourth MVP in six seasons, Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets is the overwhelming choice, snagging 67% of the votes. This prediction highlights the sustained, unprecedented dominance of the Serbian superstar.
Trailing Jokic are Luka Doncic of the Los Angeles Lakers (10%) and last season's MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Thunder (8%). It seems GMs believe the reigning MVP will have to settle for another incredible season while Jokic reclaims the top individual honor. Also receiving significant buzz is San Antonio’s phenom Victor Wembanyama, who received 7% of the MVP votes, an impressive figure for a player so early in his career.
Coach Spoelstra: Consistency is King
Once again, the respect for Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra is near-unanimous. Spoelstra was voted the best coach in the league, capturing 52% of the vote. The only other coach to receive a substantial portion was Oklahoma City's Mark Daigneault, who finished second with 34%. Spoelstra’s perennial excellence, regardless of the roster changes, makes him a benchmark for coaching brilliance across the league, a theme often discussed on the Sports Channel during the offseason.
Position-by-Position Excellence and Defensive Dominance
The GMs also ranked the top players at each position, showcasing a blend of established veterans and rising stars. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (73%) was the clear-cut choice for best point guard, while Anthony Edwards (70%) topped the shooting guard list. Giannis Antetokounmpo (93%) and Nikola Jokic (97%) were virtually unanimous picks at power forward and center, respectively.
When it comes to defense, there's a new king. Despite his early shutdown last season, Victor Wembanyama was voted the overwhelming favorite for Best Defensive Player, commanding 80% of the vote. This massive vote of confidence confirms the hype around his generational defensive potential, a key storyline for every Sports Channel analyst. The GMs also see Cooper Flagg of Dallas as the clear Rookie of the Year winner, receiving a near-perfect 97% of the votes.
Stephen Curry and the Most Improved Teams
Golden State's Stephen Curry may have been supplanted in some position rankings, but he remains the league's undisputed best pure shooter (93%). He was also the top choice for best leader and the player GMs would want taking the critical shot with the game on the line.
Finally, the GMs expect to see significant strides from a few clubs. Orlando (47%) and Atlanta (20%), tied with San Antonio (20%), are tipped to be the most improved teams this season. The dramatic changes and player development on display will make these teams essential viewing on any Sports Channel broadcast.
The NBA is poised for another electrifying season, and the general managers have laid out their forecast. Will the Thunder fulfill the prophecy, and can Jokic ascend to MVP status once more? Only time will tell, but the excitement is already building!

NBA 2014-2015 Season: Predictions
This time I'm just doing a simple analysis of who will be in the playoffs in each conference
Western Conference
This conference is still going to be as stacked as ever, as competitive as ever. So although I'll give my standings here, I acknowledge that the standings given here are iffy at best
1) San Antonio Spurs: I'm giving them this spot because 1) they've havent had a season where they won less than 50 games since the 1998-99 shortened season where there only were 50 games. 2) They just won the championship and still have almost exactly the same team
2) Clippers: Everything with Sterling distracted them last season and I think that's largely why they fell off. Doc Rivers is one of the greatest coaches in the league (I think it's Pop from San Antonio, then Carlisle from Dallas then either Doc or Spolestra from Miami), CP3 is the great point guard and Blake is getting more dominant and actually has more of a post presence. If DeAndre can make at least 50 (dare I even say 60) percent of his free throws then they'll be really hard for anyone to beat. Plus I've also heard that Spencer Hollins was a good pickup for them (he played in Cleveland last year).
3) OKC: Kevin Durant is the man. He can do anything offensively. Russell Westbrook is a better point guard and facilitator than before but he still really feel like a SG to me. He should play that position and let Reggie Jackson play point guard most of the time. If OKC can shift the PG position between Jackson and Westbrook, like Miami did with Wade, Lebron and Chalmers, than I think that that will make OKC lethal because that will force the defense to constantly shift their attention and change their strategies. Each PG will run the offense a little differently which will give OKC options. The biggest problem the have is their bench. When they faced San Antonio in the Conference Finals I think only Reggie Jackson, Jeremy Lamb and Derek Fisher were bench players that were able to score more than 10 points. That's gotta be better next year, and I think getting Anthony Morrow was a step in the right direction but somehow I don't feel like it will be enough.
4) Golden State: They have the second best point guard in the league in Steph Curry (who also leads the league in 3 pointers made). Klay Thompson is also a good shooter at times, though he is wildly inconsistent. He is also a decent defender on the perimeter. Iggy is also a great defender and Andrew Bogut is great for them as a rim protector. The biggest reason that they are better now then before is their bench: getting Shaun Livingston in particular was a great upgrade for them because now they can rest Curry more often and therefore help preserve his ankles
5) Dallas Mavericks: They kept the same offensive power that they had before (Dirk is 10th on the NBA all time leading scorers list and at one point last year Monta lead the league in offensive efficiency) plus they upgraded their defense through aquisitions like Al-Farouq Aminu and Tyson Chandler. Richard Jefferson is a great 3 point shooter and Chandler Parsons is good at just about everything offesivly. They've also added youth to their roster and generally added some depth by hiring quality players like Jameer Nelson (and Chandler Parsons for that matter) who can play multiple positions. See the related blog on the Mavericks off season moves for more details.
6) Houston Rockets: Houston will regret letting go of Chandler Parsons, although Trevor Ariza isn't a bad player. Also I think getting rid of Jeremy Lin, who gave a lot of fire-power from the bench, was a bad idea. That's why they've dropped in my estimation just a little bit (though keep in mind that 3 games last year was what stood between the 6 and 9th seeds... the west is crazy). Ultimately Dwight Howard and James Harden, along with supporting players like Terrence Jones and Trevor Ariza will probably push the Rockets into the playoffs like they did before.
7) Portland Trailblazers: They are coming. Big time. Damian Lillard, LaMarcus Aldridge, Robin Lopez and Nicholas Batum are all big time stars and if they can stay healthy and united...watch out.
8) Memphis Grizzlies: They already basically beat OKC (that suspension was complete B.S. As far as I am concerned Memphis was robbed). Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol are big, tough dudes. Incredible centers, who command everything that happens in the post and the team as a whole plays tough defense. Offensively they were great as well with veterans like Tayshaun Prince. Finally, they got a huge pickup in Vince Carter. Vince has still got enough of that power and edge to make him very, very formidable. He was a powerful 6th man for Dallas this past year and I suspect will provide some of the same power for Memphis.
Honorable Mention: Phenoix Suns: They did so well last year that I wouldn't be surprised if they made it this year, but the overall strength of the Western Conference teams prevents me from saying more definitively that they will.
Eastern Conference
In the East there are only two teams really worth talking about.
1) Cavaliers: Seriously, they have Lebron James, Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson, Kyrie Irving, Mike Miller, Shawn Marion, James Jones, Anderson Varejao and they may still get Ray Allen. How can you vote against them? Oh, and although their coach, David Blatt, hasn't coached in the NBA, he is one of the most respected coaches in Europe (4x Israeli Coach of the Year, 6x Israeli Cup Champion, 4x Israeli League Champion, FIBA EuroChallenge Champion, Russian Super League Coach of the Year, Italian League Champion, Italian Cup Champion, Adriatic League Champion, Euroleague Champion and Euroleague Coach of the Year) and he has coached a bunch of NBA players. So they are far and away the favorites to win the East
2) Chicago Bulls: They are truly formidable. Their defense is great, thanks to coach Tom Thibodeau, what they lacked last year was a player that could make his own shot and take over offensively. In that regard getting Pau Gasol was a huge upgrade for them, but a lot of this rests on Derrick Rose and his ability to stay healthy. If they can keep him healthy, then they will go far. Even if he goes down, so long as they have beasts like Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson just dominating, especially in the paint, it's hard to imagine them falling below the second seed.
After these two all the other teams in the East are pretty weak. Which means that one of them may go 31-51 and still get into the 6th seed.
3) Washington Wizards: John Wall and Nene are excellent players. Plus I think the playoff experience they garnered last year (when they beat Chicago and lost to Miami in 5) should help them out here. Yeah, there's no Trevor Ariza, but adding Paul Pierce offsets that.
4) Charlotte Bobcats: A team that finally made the playoffs last year and did a great move by signing Lance Stephenson. I suspect they'll be a little bit better than before.
5) Miami Heat: Losing Lebron James hurts. While Luol Deng can help fill in a lot of those gaps (I still think he should have come to the Mavericks) he can't fill in all of them. Although I think Chris Bosh and Mario Chalmers are pretty good, I don't think that they're that good. They're not good enough to carry the team and Dwyane Wade's knees are a total liability at this point. They're good enough to get the fifth seed but not much better
6) Toronto Raptors: Kyle Lowry, Patrick Patterson, DeMar DeRozan, Amir Johnson and Greveis Vasqueis have all given Canada a reason to be hopeful. They are explosive and, barring injuries of course, should retain that explosiveness for the season.
7) Atlanta Hawks: They gave the Pacers such a run for their money in the first round of the playoffs that it's hard to think that they won't be making back into the post season. After all nothing really changed
8) New York Knicks: Carmelo Anthony is one of the best all around offensive players in the league. Some people put him third after Lebron and Durant in terms of his offensive skills. He is a juggernaut. Jose Calderon is an upgrade from Felton, Dalembert can do some damage as well as Shane Larkin, especially if he comes off the bench. Then, if J.R. Smith can get his act together something special can really happen here. If by special you mean make into the 8th seed in a early weak Eastern Conference and get bounced out in the first round.
