Character breakdown thing: Sam Hanna the Manna!
i honestly can’t remember what this was referring to, i know it was regarding an ask meme but it was so long ago, i don’t know if there was more to it but… i’ve been thinking a lot about sam lately and have quite a lot to say on this so, here we :)
i recently re-watched little angels which, is still one of my favourites and the fact that it was frank military’s introduction as a writer to the show - for his first episode, he did so much especially for sam’s character and really highlighted one of the biggest and most important parts of his character and explaining exactly why, sam is the way he is:
SAM HANNA HAS SURVIVORS GUILT
it’s not something that is too obvious before this episode. in fact, it’s not even something that is touched upon but when you know what sam has gone through, what happened to him, it makes every part of his character make more sense. why does he push people the way he does - why does he push them so hard? why is he so focused on training? on making sure that they able to protect themselves and their partner and their team?
all of these questions can essentially be answered with, he doesn’t want others to go through what HE went through. he doesn’t want them to be in a position where they almost die or are faced with losing their partner, the people closest to them! how much extra training do you think sam put himself through, forced himself through after bosnia? pushing himself to the absolute limit to ensure that this never happens again and never being able to stop thinking about the fact that: if he was faster, paid more attention, was more observant, a stronger fighter - that all of this could have saved his friend. he never would have been buried alive and he wouldn’t have to live with all of this.
dom is probably the perfect example of demonstrating sam’s mentality. as kensi says to dom, if he shows sam that he can protect himself and the team, he won’t be as tough on him. he’ll ease up. now, this isn’t something that we ever see but you can gather that it’s true. sam doesn’t want to risk someone going out into the field and being placed in the same situation and someone ends up dead because of it. when dom is kidnapped, sam’s first thought is that he should have pushed him harder and when callen reminds him that if he pushed too hard, dom may have quit and you see for sam, that is a reasonable alternative. push them hard enough so they are unstoppable, so no one pays the price and dies or they leave and are not at risk of anything bad happening to them and they aren’t possibly placing someone at risk.
sam’s guilt drives every single thing that he does :( and his guilt never stops. it happens for multiple reasons over the years but it’s always a driving and overriding factor in why he is the way he is.
