It was late---beyond late some might say. The moon was crawling through the sky and dark eyes could only find themselves to stare up at the stars in utter exhaustion. Insomnia nibbled at him, keeping awake as Umbreon lay sleeping next to him. The night was beautiful and of that he could not lie, but Gary curled his fingers around the necklace hanging loose from his neck as he idly twirled it between his fingers. Anxiety and sleep deprivation were eating him from the inside out.
Yet he knew not what he was worried about. He drifted to thoughts of the next city he was approaching---Olivine. It was far too late for him to continue trudging ahead, but he had little reason to stick around if he wasn’t going to get any rest. The young trainer tried closing his eyes, imagining the beautiful slumber he could taste on his lips though it was narrowly escaping him. An irritated sigh stemmed from his throat roughly with a scratchiness that reminding him of how thirsty he was right now.
He kept his eyes closed for another moment, listening to the sound of wild Pokémon in the far distance as well as his own Umbreon’s quiet breathing next to him. He could feel his body giving out to sleep, his body feeling foreign and numb as he relaxed completely--- trying to pull his mind from whatever was keeping it active.
Then there was a noise.
It sounded close. He knew there were Pokémon around, but none usually came close enough to be a problem. If they did, they’d wake Umbreon without a chance of sneaking up on him. His eyes snapped open and darted down toe Umbreon’s sleeping form still, undisturbed and peaceful. His eyebrows twtiched together and he turned over onto his side, carefully petting his Pokémon to calm his own nerves as he took a tentative glance through the darkness underneath the moonlight above the forest.
