Shelton Vineyards 2017 ‘2-5-9’ Petit Verdot (SRP $25): Two things I learned during a recent North Carolina wine chat were: (1) Petit Verdot is an up-and-coming variety in the state, and (2) the Yadkin Valley appellation is capable of growing Petit Verdot fruit of world-class quality. This is a fine example from Shelton Vineyards. It pours a deep ruby color. Aromas of black cherry and purple stone fruit are joined by fruitcake, cocoa dust and a bit of espresso on the palate—all framed by fine-grained tannins, ending with a medium-long, polished finish. An appealing, well-balanced wine that's ready to enjoy now or cellar. I enjoyed a glass whilst cooking and later with grilled coffee-rubbed beef tenderloin.
