DANS DAD!!
God, I missed him. This story hit so close to home as well since I live in the Blue Ridge, blue grass was definitely a heavy influence on me when growing up (even though I might not show it all the time)
When they started talking about the fragility of folk culture and music my heart started to strain because of just how real that is and how easy it is to blend in with the newest and coolest fads. How easy it is to forget where you came from and the importance of your roots no matter how insignificant they might seem. The stress put on the preservation of the mundane also hit hard, though we might be able to recall and pass around everything right now what about 5 years from now? 10? 20?
Some may scoff at the preservation of the mundane and seemingly unimportant, but as Mal said, these primary sources give us that vital window into the past we would never have had otherwise! Take this as encouragement to preserve your roots no matter how boring they seem.
Celebrate where you come from! Go to live music in bars, taverns, and pubs! Get involved with the music of the culture that surrounds you! In the end, without someone to listen to these things, they die and are forgotten. So let the music live in your heart and pass it on to all who will listen.
