I stole the calculations from Loren Petrich's Geometry Demo and reprojected them to the Lambert's Azimuthal Equal Area projection centered on the South Pole.

There are many more very small settlements in South Africa, Western Australia and Tasmania, and a few more in Tierra del Fuego, which would have made this map quite more crowded and add very little information. What would have made a more significant change would be the inclusion of Tristan da Cunha (less than 300 people in the whole archipelago) between the Stanley and Struisbaai areas.

The five major cities (3000+ inhabitants according to this list) of Greenland are, from northernmost to southernmost:

Ilulissat (4563 inhabitants)

Aasiaat (3120 inhabitants)

Sisimiut (5491 inhabitants)

Nuuk (17796 inhabitants)

Qaqortoq (3093 inhabitants)

I usually divide my maps in the Pacific Ocean, but this time all the smaller zones are over there, so I ended up with two Icelands instead.

Interesting takeaways:

Tasiilaq, the largest east coast city, has 2006 inhabitants.

Denmark proper is closest to the southernmost city, India and Australia are closest to the northernmost.

Australia and New Zealand are in different zones.

Parts of Antarctica are closer to the northernmost than the southernmost city. Here is a zoomed-in version of of the map.

So I created this little number yesterday, and like most maps that I spend about ten minutes on and don't give a whole lot of thought to (as opposed to the ones that I pour hours into that get two upvotes), it was quite popular!

I really enjoyed reading all of the feedback, and wanted to deliver on r/MapPorn's great suggestions. For the original map, I defined "major cities" as the 100 largest US metro areas. Some folks fairly criticized that choice, so for this map I went with major cities as defined by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC). I'm sure some people will still be unhappy with the inclusion or exclusion of certain cities, but take it up with GaWC, not OP ;)

There are 30 US cities on the GaWC list, including: New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, San Francisco, Miami, Boston, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Denver, Seattle, St. Louis, San Diego, Cleveland, Detroit, San Jose, Phoenix, Austin, Cincinnati, Kansas City, Tampa, Charlotte, Baltimore, Raleigh, Orlando, Columbus and Pittsburgh. For those that requested the inclusion of Puerto Rico, San Juan is ranked as a major city and I included an inset map here showing the result if San Juan is included.

The main difference between this map and the previous version is that Honolulu's territory, now that Honolulu is not included, is divided up between Seattle, San Francisco and San Diego. If San Juan, Puerto Rico, is included, it knocks out Miami and takes half of Boston's territory in Africa.
