nebetta being the da vinci of her time and going on to create such magnificent feats of engineering and being a decorated genius remembered for generations to come really is so gutting there is always something so gutting about genius characters losing the person they love because they are so so desperate to think their way out of it like there hasn't been a single challenge they've come across before that their intellect couldn't obsess a solution out of but this... this isn't something they could fix or solve. and the fact darya dies because of something architectural? when nebetta's speciality is structural? i picture her completely throwing herself into her work in her grief, swallowed whole by blueprints, but she will never be able to build something that fixes that one mistake and she will never be able to figure out the schematics of the one thing that mattered

#esp bc the tunnel system they die in is part of the labyrinthine kusig tunnel network nebetta has been obsessing over for YEARS #like she SHOULD have been able to figure it out. she should have predicted the pulleys closing them in and flooding the room #but she didn't and it was too late and her own passion got her lover behind its teeth and swallowed #nebarya #nebetta #the abalaoi siblings both becoming obsessive in grief is so important to me btw

#first scene of nebetta in the whole of tbos has her calling darya 'anibe' which means starlight. btw #and has darya lighting up when she sees her and throwing herself into her lap not caring for any sort of formality #(do they ever) while lilla is just stood there like um. hi #nebarya

in fact nebarya have a lot of orpheus/eurydice parallels now i think about it. orpheus the favourite of the gods. nebetta chosen by azaria. orpheus' failure to save eurydice being the very proof that he loved her. darya's death being an act of love; she gave her life so that nebetta would be chosen. only one could be saved, and sacrifice makes gods stronger, so darya gave the ultimate sacrifice. nebetta's very existence is a mark of the love darya had for her, but she despairs over it, because it also represents her failure to save darya. she appeals to the gods to give darya back to her. it doesn't work.

nebarya are so fun bc at a glance they seem like very very similar people yet i have never once struggled differentiating them when writing. they are so individual to me. nebetta is easily smarter than any of the other amagi but she's ridiculously trusting to the point of naivety. darya shares her joyfulness and lust for life but she's the more cynical of the two. darya will fight someone. nebetta hates any form of confronation. they're both silly as fuck.

#like they each have SO MUCH personality to me it's kinda crazy #esp bc lilla - who also has a lot of personality - is someone i struggle to write sometimes #yet nebarya - who should be difficult in scenes together bc they're basically the same genre of character - are so so easy to write #nebarya
