Question for you: if you were to rename the Water Tribe characters in ATLA (like, Sokka, Katara, their family) Inuktitut names, what would you name them?

Oh my god what a question. Ohhhh dear god what a difficult question. But one that I now absolutely must answer!! I’m somewhat taking into consideration their current names so they somewhat resemble each other… but some things just can’t be helped lol

Katara: Qamaniq (widening of a river). I’ve always loved how the SWT sits at the end of a river, and I think that visual would be so stark to her mother. It becomes a nice reminder of home when she journeys elsewhere to the world, as when river water merges with the sea.

Sokka: In my heart I really love Sagvik (chest) as representative of his grounded human condition and strength as a strategist/warrior. However I know Elder men like Hakoda would definitely name their beloved only son Irniq (son) so its up in the air lol

Kanna: Kanaaq (shin/lower leg) is honestly perfect for her. The most stable part of the body that bears the brunt of a lot of force to be sure that the overall system keeps moving. I love her so much. (inb4 yes weve got a tendency to name kids after body parts It is what it is)

Hakoda: Piuangut (great man). Is it on the nose? Yes. But I’m a sucker for a young Sagvik having to live under the guidance of a man that embodied greatness up to his literal name and all the pressure that put him under as he was growing up.

Kya: Am I to be even more on the nose to say that Kiinaq (face) would go crazy? Yeah probably. I love Qilliq (to shine/sparkle) a lot too though, and would likely fit better.

Yue: I in part feel a little bad about renaming her since she and the Northern WT have more overt Chinese influence so it’d feel weird to deny that. And her name is literally just moon. But Taqqiq (moon) as a second name is really cute. Yue Taqqiq. oh god her name is Moon Moon now whoops

Hama: Amiaq (colour/paint). I hold a lot of love for her character, and I think she deserves a name as cute and lovely as she once was and deserved to be before she was imprisoned.

I’m less familiar with the Legend of Korra characters since I never finished it, so I don’t think I could confidently give them names justttt yet. I’ll reblog this with my names whenever I do some quick wiki refreshers on the characters. Or actually just rewatch the damn thing.

But isnt it crazy that ATLA only started really using names that actually resembled Inuktitut in the sequel series and basically only for primarily antagonists (at least when theyre introduced). And one of them is named Eska. Okay that last bit is a stretch but god I hate Eska and Desna’s names lol

You might already know this just from your own experience as an arctic ndn, but I've heard over the years (and kind of observed) that Inuit are & were sometimes racialized to be as "Asian" instead of "American Indian" especially back in the day, and sometimes in old cartoons you see of racist caricatures that were usually given to East Asian peoples (typically Chinese specifically) also apply and were represented in Inuit caricatures, like yellow skin instead of the usual red skin they gave other, more Southern Native Americans. I do believe this is also part of where the term "FNMI" (First Nations, Métis, Inuit) comes from in Canada, because Inuit are essentially classified as like... not Native American, even though for a large part, other First Nations also consider Inuit to be First Nations/Native, and they are. It's from a White, colonial line of thinking.

So I think Hawke saying "Inuit aren't Native Americans" is essentially from this line of thinking, even though it literally doesn't make any sense.

Yeah, I def know of that way Inuit get racialized as Asian instead of NDN, esp Alaskan Natives. There are some aspects to it that aren't divorced from reality at least in the fact that there's Yup'ik in Alaska and Yup'ik in Siberia, or how some Alaskan tribes got separated from each other from US/Russian borders. I too have Yakut ancestry, but regardless of some cultures being shared between Siberia and Alaska that doesn't make Inuit, Iñupiaq, Yup'ik, etc not NDN because we still are, by definition, American Indigenous. I feel like anyone who tries to claim Arctic NDNs as Asian are doing something race-sciencey where they claim that we must be because we "look" Asian (whatever that means) so I shouldn't be shocked that Hawke of all people would fall back on that belief considering everything about vaem.

Fancast question: who would you cast to play Inuk Avi in a live action adaptation of taz, and then who do you think could voice act as him? :)

Oh man, voice cast is EASILY Paul Nutarariaq. I really love his voice, a nice equal split between really chill and easily excitable. Nutarariaq be the Avi of my dreams. him speaking ! plus, a visual of him for funsies.

as for a live action fancast… man, i honestly really suck at applying real faces to characters! but as I’ve thought about it, im gonna have to steal Ipeelie Ootoova! while he could totally play Kuruk, i think he could also play someone as chill and goofy as my Inuk Avi… he certainly looks good in long hair. plus im biased, he’s from my hometown.

However, I think Ujarneq Fleischer would also be a good match! He’s very funny and so so silly. I loved him in Alanngut Killinganni and Minori! plus, look at his hairrrrr

Random question, but on the Murder on the Rockport Limited arc for taz, what food/s did you envision Jenkins serving the tres horns boys when they had brunch? I know the comic depicts it, but before I read the comic I actually didnt think of those foods! Did you picture something different? :3

honest to god I always pictured them eating eating my ideal brunch food (French and Melba toast (which Tom Bodett also mentioned in this exact arc) with jam, scrambled eggs, sausages, tater tots, an ungodly amount of fruit) and also the absolutely fucking baffling mixture of croutons and edamame that Justin and Griffin brought up in their respective goofs during this sequence. not to mention the immediate Yoghurt Room Jenkins brought up right after. maybe he gave them some yoghurt to set the mood.
