When I say that the Viper witchers were absolutely awful what I mean is:

the senior witchers offered no friendliness, warmth, or even guidance whatsoever to the younger witchers or those still training

not only were they left to fend for themselves but whatever bonds formed between them were highly discouraged

conflicts were purposefully sowed as to “weed out” those who couldn’t stand up for themselves or fell into the trap of trusting those around them

speaking of traps, the whole keep was laden with them. the witchers to be were told where most of them (not all) were placed only once and if they failed to sense the ones they weren’t told about or forgot where to step and which doors to avoid, that too was seen as weeding out those not fit to finish their training

another way of removing those considered not suitable was routinely poisoning their food and drinks. either their bodies were strong enough to regenerate from the poisoning or their senses were keen enough to detect it; anything else would result in death

all dead bodies were thrown out into the desert as to attract necophages and all sorts of monsters, used as another layer of protection for the keep and in case any witcher was foolish enough to try to run away
