Between worlds ENDING and the last few days being absolute GARBAGE it was a nice break to have a REAL conversation.        maybe if he weren’t stoned out of his mind, he’d find it in himself to be hurt. as a teenager--- a teenager who’s been kept in that godforsaken academy for his entire life--- feelings are usually at the forefront of one’s mind. typically they’re sensitive, confused, needy. they’re growing and changing and something like this         ( something like the guy you’ve been flirting with telling you that he can’t be gay right now )        would likely piss anyone else off. klaus, on the other hand, stares at dave with something of a disconnect; he finds himself more concerned about dave than about himself.

       “---i’m not sure you have a choice, if that’s what you’re feeling...” he starts, voice a little flat. he pauses, then shrugs. “i’d like it if you could be. but i get it, i guess.”

       fuck, it’s so hot. his skin is damp with sweat, his face feels like it’s on fire, and he swears he’ll blow whoever he has to up the chain of command just to get a fan. but he doesn’t let that stop him. his body is pressed against dave’s and even though the hands on his chest are radiating an almost unbearable heat, he wouldn’t trade it for the world. he doesn’t know yet that this very memory, this moment where he’s touching dave like teenagers who’ve snuck off to the bathroom during a movie on their second date, is going to stick in his mind no matter how fuzzy it seems right now.

       his arms stretch outward, resting on dave’s strong shoulders, and his hands slide up into the back of dave’s moist hair. it’s not romantic at all--- in fact, it’s just about as far away from that as he can imagine--- and yet his heart feels like it’s going to pound right out of his chest.

       “who says it’s not romantic enough?” he asks, hot breath falling on dave’s lips as he tips his chin upward to grin at him. “this is way nicer than some of the places i’ve been to; this one has a roof.”

       the sound of basketballs hitting the court is suddenly the sound of bullets being fired off right beside him; the sound of pre-teens laughing is suddenly the sound of a screaming comrade; the summer sun is suddenly BOILING HOT, causing pools of sweat to roll down his spine. he can’t say what happened to change his mood--- he’d been fine only moments ago, stopping to watch the kids play the way he and his siblings would for half an hour on saturday--- but he can’t remember the shift from feeling perfectly pleasant to feeling like there’s a boulder on his chest, crushing the air from his lungs and drawing the last several, frantic heartbeats from the failing organ.

       long fingers lift upward, tangle into a mess of curls, and klaus presses the heels of his hands in against his ears. his breathing gets rough and panicked, and rather than hoping that someone sees him and helps him, he finds himself hoping that no one sees him at all, that he can pass through this in peace.

       it’s when he opens his eyes to see dave that his heartbeat finally slows a little, that he finds himself grounded, and he reaches out to grab onto the other man’s arms. now he doesn’t feel like he’s sinking into the ground. now he feels like maybe he can pull himself out of this, using dave as a lifeboat.

       “hey! h-hey,” he laughs, patting one of dave’s shoulders and dropping his head forward onto his chest. “jesus... i’m glad i was meeting you. i---” he reaches up to rub sweat away from his forehead with the back of his hand. “---i thought i was a goner for a minute there.”

       only now there’s another painful realization sinking in: he’s not in vietnam, but he is in a war zone. meeting dave feels like walking across a field of landmines and he’s just waiting for one of them to go off, ripping him to pieces.

       a landmine would be more merciful; at least it would be an instant death.
