Poetry, plants, and mountain climbing serve to balance. Songs with indelible beats serve to shine, and poor singers are rich in courage when they let music ride on the air from their lips, even on an empty stage. Food tastes sweeter when cooked, not bought, and is best consumed with others. Trees hold conversation slowly and without reservations, but if you listen in the rain you can hear them laugh at the tickling drops. You may feel small and you may feel weak in the face of incredible odds and you are right to. You are right to because life is chaos and passion and pain, a whirling storm that throws us together and apart endlessly, that tears some of us down, that changes us forever.
However, you must remember too that you are part of a species who flies on metal wings into the endless void, who tap out love letters into digital worlds. Who have the capacity to care for one another enough to do the impossible. Who pluck patterns from the whirling chaos and, laughing, weave songs and stories and satire. Who write and sing and smile and hug and burn bright in the face of extraordinary darkness. When you are adrift remember this fact. Remember that no one is lost at sea forever. We do not build ships in order to stay afloat; we build them to search.
