Environmental Literacy
The ultimate goal of environmental education is to create an environmentally literate citizenry. Environmental literacy encompasses all five objectives of environmental education-helping learners gain awareness, knowledge, appropriate attitudes, citizen action skills, and, finally, the motivation to become active, engaged citizens.
Responsible Environmental Behavior (REB) encompasses the range of observable behaviors aimed at or intended to contribute to the solution of environmental problems (Marcinkowski, 1998). REB is the manifestation of environmental literacy. Thus, the ultimate aim of environmental literacy is to develop and apply responsible environmental action skills. Educators must possess the understandings, skills, and attitudes associated with environmental literacy, and they must be able to provide this instruction at a level appropriate to the learners they teach.
