i dont like purple. really dont like them. at first i was neutral, but the hype and angst everyone immediately started piling on them, only multiplied after his backstory, put me off permanently
a main reason is that people who put purple on a pedestal tend to neglect the rest of the color gang? like blue, yellow, red, green, they all have genuinely fascinating characters and developments and their backstory--what was it like to grow up in a fighting simulation all alone?--is ignored despite having potential. not everybody does this, and i do get what it feels like to prefer a side character over a main cast, but it really frustrates me because i love the color gang so much and the fandom tends to just make them boring in favor of purple. who has now just become a sad little thing
maybe i'd be more okay with it if ppl explored the side of purple that seems stuck in being a 'villain', caught in a self-inflicted cycle of mimicking the strength of their abuser to gain control over their life, the genuine trauma that must have resulted from losing their mother and how it fed into a desire to make up for the perceived failure by turning to a different role model. but no, they just whump on purple and just ignore other characters. again personal opinion, i just feel like the rest of the color gang are just more interesting in general and it feels like low-hanging fruit to like purple
again- the color gang grew up battling each other. they were coded to fight each other, and they still are friends. that's a level of freedom honestly equal to dark choosing to team up with chosen, i think. they were stuck in their website for so long, no wonder they're so impulsive and enamored with the rest of the world. no wonder they tend to be ignorant. red is the first to fight and the first to die and he's devoted to his animals and he's been used as a weapon through possession twice. yellow is desperate to figure out everything, even when it endangers their loved ones, but all of their discovers are used to give back to the others. blue has sacrificed themself for a stranger, has an ability to connect with other species, and has mastered the tactics of a villain who once imprisoned them. green aims for perfection, believing in one's ability to constantly improve, and it's helped others as much as it's harmed him.
nowadays, since purple isnt appearing as much, there's less of a focus than there used to be, but back then it irritated me enough to almost leave the fandom. there are four cool, nuanced, interesting characters right there! why do they need tragic backstories and poor morality to be cool? they're cool on their own!
[this is also why i'm disinterested in almost any ava works, since they also focus on tco, tdl, victim, orange, and that makes sense and i respect it, but avm has genuinely the most content to explore and the fandom is wasting such cool characters >:(]
I personally like Purple, though this sort of thing is why I like giving EVERY character a little focus when I'm making something, honestly. You get sick of just one pretty quick.. Besides, way more fun to explore a bunch of them than just focus on one you like. I have like, an order for who gets focus chapters, and I think everyone should have something similar to that!
