“ you are better than this , kaia . ” these are not words of encouragement ; they all but bleed with irritation , the revanchist’s expression stony and indifferent as they loom over her with training staff in hand . even like this , stripped of their armor and in the gentle shapes that cloth provides , they cut an intimidating figure , all but filling the room with level words alone . they exhale sharply before continuing . “ let your anger fuel you , not control you . RISE ABOVE IT as it pushes you ; only then will you find strength beyond your limits . ” they pace before her , stave twirling in their hand in an absent - minded flourish . “ get up . we will go again . ”

they pity her . it is no great effort for them to acknowledge this ; they feel it bubbling beneath their skin , words of comfort surging in their throat like bile . what requires work is choking on it , swallowing the platitudes back down where they may collapse under the weight of darkness . it is the jedi who dress up all the ugly patches of the galaxy with the delicate trappings of white lies and mysticism , offering a caring hand so you don’t notice the deception until it’s too late . the revanchist has left that life and its hypocrisies behind .

BUT STILL , THEY HESITATE ! the truth will set you free , but it is not a glorious freedom , soaring without abandon . it is scaling the mountain with aching fingers and numb feet , every inch of you scraped raw and screaming . it is reaching the top exhausted and broken to be born anew by throwing yourself from the peak . it is embracing the dark with hands steeped in blood . their fingers clasp around each other behind their back as they stare kaia down , impassive and unflinching at her outbursts , lips pursed into a line . resolute as the mountain itself . what a wretched thing , the truth is .

“ no . ” they say finally , because they will hurt this child someday , ruin her , but they will never lie to her . not about this .

this will not break her . they know it because they have planned for this ; when the time is right kaia will not just break but shatter and all caught in her wake will be shredded with the fragments of what once was . and she will emerge from the wreckage , BORN ANEW from sunder and ash . it will be wretched , it will be beautiful , and it will break revan’s heart . these things always do .

“ THIS IS JUSTICE . sacrifice . ” they speak coldly , critically ; berating kaia for questioning a truth she , a child baptized in the fires of loss and revenge , should already know . if she is to learn only one thing, let it be this ! they would carve this truth into her bones if they could . “ we are rarely afforded the luxury of mercy and all its unintended consequences . it would be wise of you to remember that , ad'ika . ”

while armament had flourished among the ranks of their kind , there were distinguishable aspects in their helmets , that could NOT be mistaken by the masked sith . he knew this , from a time the current generation would scarcely recall - when the mandalorian war raged and he stood as a prodigious figurehead for the republic . but such days were gone , WASTED on a front that had no chance of surviving . yet this confrontation , be it by the force’s will or some other power , left revan somewhat nostalgic .

“ the mandalorian’s , still somehow thriving in the universe . although , i may be exaggerating your conditions a bit . ” they certainly didn’t INSPIRE when they passed the torch down.

A return, but for who? Ben had been back, had turned his back against the dark side and defeated that voice inside of him that was persisting on his actions. Now he was free to do what he had promised to do all those years ago when they had first met. She was waiting for him, just as they had agreed if both of them came out of this alive. Anxiety turns over like a crash of a wave against a wall, flipping and cascading back down onto a rocky bed. The sky clears through the view-port and Ben lands down the ship, the pressure of the land letting of a soft push. He can’t sense her but he continues to search.

He glanced her over, truthfully uncertain of what he wanted from her. The longer he lived, the less things he wanted. He’d seen just about everything there was to see by now. A boring existence, truly. If information was all she wanted, really, he didn’t care about putting a price on it. But... if she so badly wanted to repay him, at least then he’d have something to pass a little time.
