When did you find out you wanted to write for a living?
Aw, this is one of my favorite stories to tell!
From about the age of I don’t remember till the age of 15 I was completely entrenched in that theater life. I, of course, wanted to be a STAR, but I never got the big roles because, frankly, I was just okay at acting. Well, my high school put on this festival every year called Skits-o-Phrena. It was all student written, directed, acted and designed 10-minute plays. I decided to submit one, so I wrote an entire ten-minute play in one night and submitted it to the committee the next day. And my play was selected to be one of the ones performed! I got to directed and design the whole production, it was amazing.
So, the night of the performance, I’m sitting in the audience and I’m watching actors on stage repeat MY words, I’m watching as the audience laughs at MY words and my whole world just…shifted. But, it wasn’t until after all the performances were finished, when I was standing in the middle of the stage greeting family and friends that my dad walked up to me. Now, to understand this impact, you have to understand my dad. My dad is not someone who just doles out praise for any little thing. He doesn’t bullshit you and he tells it like it is, to a fault.
He looked at me, smiled and said, “I know you want to be an actress, but I think you should really pay attention to what happened on this stage tonight.”
That’s when I found out and that’s when I knew writing was what I was meant to do. And I’ve been in writing hell ever since. HAHAHA.
