This is the ash tree I used to do Zhan Zhuang qigong with when I was a teenager. It was not until my early 20s when I learned GM Peng’s medical qigong and the tree and flower and moon and sun qigong that I really began to spend time working with this tree. It has been struck by lightning at least twice and recovered both times. The stillness it holds is deep. I went and visited it when I was out visiting my dad a couple of days ago. Trees hold many secrets to understanding stillness and being in our hearts. It felt like I was visiting with an old friend. So there is this sand method I have read about for years in martial art training manuals. Different names for it. In GM Peng Jiu Ling’s medical qigong it is part of the third level of training. Sand apparently mimics the kind of electrical conductivity of human muscles. I find this very fascinating. Training this method involves doing a specific type of standing stake - Zhan Zhuang for 45 - 50 minutes. This kind of work increases the efficiency of blood and lymph flow, strengthens the tendons and wakes up the nervous system. If there is one thing I have learned from GM Peng Jiu Ling’s medical qigong system is that the horse stance is very misunderstood and there is a lot more depth inside the body - especially working with the fascia this way - than pretty much most people will ever understand.
