So Xmas highlighted one of the dichotomies that defines me - an internal tension, you could say. Or you could say that Xmas highlighted my hypocrisy. That would probably be more accurate. What I'm talking about is my constant railing against commercialism and waste, particularly in the lead-up to Xmas, contrasted with the gleeful grabbing pleasure I get from the acquisition of stuff. If I tried, I could probably justify myself in some way. But instead, I'm just gonna say, "Look at all this awesome stuff I got for Christmas!" I hope you all got awesome stuff too (one of my cousins got a baby, which was a pretty good trick). #herodotus #terrypratchett #thetravelsofsirjohnmandeville #johnmandeville #neilmacgregor #kakuzookakura #thebookoftea #punkrockjesus #seanmurphy #tankgirl #primalscream #buzzcocks #blacksabbath #masterofreality #thespecials #metallica #masterofpuppets #smashingpumpkins #siamesedream #comics #vinylscores https://www.instagram.com/p/B6sW3GqH6cZ/?igshid=1pbmgl7ddqp61
Because of the long, long history of British shipping, immigration, trade, empire, missionaries, you can have a better shot at telling a worldwide story in the British Museum's collection than any other. Britain has been more connected with the rest of the world than any other country, for longer.

The memory of surveillance in a divided Germany, especially living in GDR, attracted much public support for the American whistleblower Edward Snowden in Germany. #Germany #memoriesofanation #neilmacgregor #history #reading #readinghistory #germanhistory #surveillance #Snowden (at Berlin, Germany)
One thing that sets the monuments in Germany apart from those in other countries: they are a reflection of the crimes that were committed, and to ensure that the future be different. #readinghistory #reading #germanhistory #germany #berlin #history #neilmacgregor #memoriesofanation (at Berlin, Germany)
Still reading and falling in love with Neil MacGregor’s “A history of the world in 100 objects”. This is, so far, my favourite bit in the book - the seal found in Harappa.
This obviously has something do with the fact that this is my own history - the Indus Valley civilization’s remains found here are even situated with reference to Lahore 😊 (Harappa is 150 miles from here). This one entry alone touches on British colonialism (the archaeological discovery was made by them in the 1850s) and the consequences of Pakistan’s Partition with India (such as how archeology has developed as a discipline in India). Absolute fascination guaranteed here!

Art News | Indigenous Australia: Enduring Civilisation
Paul Daley comments on Indigenous Australian art and artefacts in relation to the uneasy politics of ownership between collector and creator. He raises the question “Do colonial artefacts ever escape their violent past?” Having been the subject of controversy even prior to the exhibition opening in both London and Australia, Indigenous Australia: Enduring Civilisation is already raising questions of property and preservation. Showing at the British Museum from 23 April- 2 August.

Review | All of This Belongs to You
Exploring both the role of the museum as a social space and what it means to people in the 21st century, the curators have used a variety of artefacts to showcase narratives about surveillance and the militarisation of public spaces. Edwin Heathcote states “This is an important exhibition about an important subject and it would probably demand a big blockbuster show to make its point.” Open until July 19 at the V&A.
