What method you used in the cleaning process? Because those really look so darn clean!

Well, since it was an owl pellet there wasn’t that much left for me to clean, just ligaments and barf gunk. But what I did was I started by getting rid of as much of the grey barf as possible by poking and scraping it off the bones with barbecue sticks. After I had gotten most of the stuff off, I placed the bones in a small plastic container filled with water to macerate them.

I let them sit there for as long as the ligaments connecting the bones together broke. (Took a few weeks - they were pretty much covered in algae at that point). Then I rinsed the bones under running water in a makeshift sieve (punched holes with a small nail on a yoghurt can, any bigger holes and the small toe bones would’ve been flushed away) to get rid of the remaining tissue and gunk. After I deemed them clean of gunk I placed them in another container full of hydrogen peroxide to bleach them, as they were still kinda grey and had algae on them. Three days later they were in the condition they are now so I took them out, let them dry, put them in another box for safekeeping and felt good about myself.

As a bit of a disclaimer: Macerating bones with flesh on them is a stinky process. My owl barf bones had already been digested once so I didn’t have to get rid of any flesh and therefore the maceration water just had a faint stale and swampy smell, instead of stinking like rotting flesh. Also, it didn’t have any grease in it, so it was safe to flush down the bathroom pipes without having to worry about it causing a blockage or stink problems.

(And as a side note, every time I handled the unclean bones, I used disposable rubber gloves and washed my hands and arms thoroughly afterwards. Dead animal parts can carry some nasty diseases so proper hygiene is important.)

Oooh, very interesting! Amazing really, how what was mere science fiction just some years ago, is now a reality.

I urge others to check out this video, too. It’s about bionic prosthetic limbs and features a dance performance by a woman using a very advanced prosthetic leg.

Hey Vol! Just some dumb questions you might have answered already, but here they go anyway: what are your digital drawing/animating materials? (what computer/tablet/programs you use and what do you think about them?)

My computer is a.. um.. Asus laptop - a couple years old model, I think, but to my understanding it was marketed as “gaming laptop” and has more video memory than laptops in general, which is always a bonus when working on larger illustrations.

For digital drawing/painting I usually use PaintTool SAI. For animating I have Photoshop CS6. Occasionally, I do vector art on Illustrator CS6. For the actual drawing I have a Wacom Cintiq 12WX.

I like SAI very much, but due to it’s max file size restrictions it tends to freeze during saving and slow down considerably when file sizes get bigger. Working on higher resolutions (600dpi and over) is pretty much impossible, so I’m considering shelling out some cash for Manga Studio at some point (heard some good things about it). I rarely use Photoshop for drawing because I just don’t like how brushes and stuff work on it. I mainly use it for tasks I can’t perform on SAI. Illustrator I like, though.
