Since I’ve gotten some new followers recently and about-pages aren’t reliably seen anymore, I figured it’s finally time for a pinned post.

So, hi! You can call me Mipe. I’m Finnish and have existed since 1989. This is where I post sketches, not-so-sketches and definitely-not-sketches of whatever, usually my characters. Sometimes I might ramble. Things here tend to be queer.

I find myself once again thinking about fiddling with the design of Pepe’s arm prosthetic. I tried to settle on it but I just don’t think the logic holds up in a way I can be happy with. So, musings.

I think my main issue is the long side casing. I’m not happy with the way it looks re: its purpose (hardware storage unit) and it doesn’t look cool enough to negate that. In fact I think it looks kinda dumb for what it’s supposed to be.

I’m thinking I could either A: get rid of it entirely (looks good, tho I like the look of the full sleeve and it’d be hard to justify keeping it without anything there), or B: add some visible wiring connecting everything to better sell the hardware storage unit aspect (like the idea, very much questioning the smartness of adding such tiny ass details on a skinny arm most often seen further away), or C: replace the casing with wires (not my fav aesthetic, plus again skinny details on a skinny body part).

Wild card option D, I design the entire damn thing anew. Not really fond of that, tho. I don’t like changing key design details after I’ve already commited to them in some way, and I’m resistant to changing the thing to begin with, so I’d rather do something less drastic.

Anyway. Rare public design thoughts from me, just using my space for thinking out loud. I hear people do that on their blogs and stuff.

If I have trouble vibing with my own story setting / plot point / character / etc., I can never tell if it's because there's genuinely something wrong with it and I should spend time interrogating the idea more to find the better version of it, or because I have a bad tendency to judge my own ideas to death, especially the ones I really like, and I should actually stop thinking about it and let it goooo.

I was going through old files and came across these character drawings I did for my last MotW campaign some years ago. I don't think I ever shared them? Rectifying that now, I think they're still fun.

I call them trullis, trulli being Finnish for (easter) witch. I had such fun lore for these guys, and now I miss it...

So this is a little, uh - I hesitate to call it a comic since it’s more like a loosely arranged sequence of drawings - of my future dnd character. It started off of a joke and then got kind of out of hand, because I was enjoying the character exploration. The intended audience for this was me and our campaign DM, which is why it’s entirely in Finnish and not expository in the least. I like to think that if you can (read it and) just roll with the premise, it’s maybe an amusing ride nonetheless. Get what you can out of it?

Had to separate in two posts, because otherwise it’d be long as hell.

I don't know if anyone finds this interesting, but I like it when people share glimpses of their messy sketches, so thought I'd share some of mine. Especially since this one is fresh and very good example of how these comic snippets are born when I am compelled™.

I don't really concern myself with paneling when doing these, just that the general order is okay (as in, I can follow it) and that expressions are the ones I intend. That one drawing I really needed to be on the same page with the rest, though, because I was getting tired, and needed to see the previous drawings to not lose my thoughts. I was also constantly fumbling the expression, so I ended up ripping pieces off my sketchbook to glue on the failed attempts. It has at least three layers of paper, probably even more on the face. Very thick, very sturdy, lmao.

I have a lot of this kind of similar snippets in my sketchbooks, though some of them are even less organized. Many times I don't have a sustained interest to clean them up digitally. This one was an exception because I had a very clear vision of the light, and I wanted to test it out on procreate.

Got my hearing aids today. I thought I'd hate all sounds at first, but curiously I actually kinda prefer the aided soundscape (so far, at least). It's like most sounds are more tolerable when you hear them fully instead of like through an earplug. Even teens being loud in a bus was less annoying because I heard words instead of an assortment of ape noises.

Only thing I sort of hate is how much noise my own head now makes if I touch my head or hair brushes against the aids. Might be time to shave my sides...

I'm sorry I'm bringing this up again, but I realized I can listen to music via bluetooth on these things and I'm having a minor crisis because even though the sound quality isn't very hi-fi, everything sounds about 10% more melodic?? More pleasant??

I mean, I liked my fav songs and singers to begin with, of course, but what do you mean THIS is what they sound like???? So many notes that I previously thought were kind of grating, or bits that sounded like the artist did a quick dib into near silence sound so smooth now.

"Of Songbirds and Lowlifes" comics masterpost

The "thugs and birds" setting (formally Of Songbirds and Lowlifes) is an unorganized hobby project I've been rotating in my head for several years. It has a narrative of sorts (a nebulous plot, if you will), and I draw bits and pieces of it in an unchronological order, with varying levels of effort, all based on my whims. Since there's now several of these bits, I've organized them here in the intended order of events, though assume unspesified amount of time passes between each.
