We celebrate you and your contributions to #BlackLibrarianship. -#scribesandvibes • #therebirthofcool • #NellaLarsen • #blacklibrarian | #HappyBirthday ・・・ #vibewise: Encouraged by Ernestine Rose; Nella Larsen broke color barriers when she became the first black woman to graduate from NYPL Library School. As a library volunteer she helped launch the first exhibit of Negro Art by utilizing the Seward Park Branch Library as a gallery space. As a librarian she helped launch Poetry Readings, Lectures, and Book Discussions held at the Harlem Branch of the New York Public Library; which attracted emerging poets, including Langston Hughes. Nella Larsen's admiration for Negro Art, Literary Works, and Culture led her to publish two novels; QUICKSAND and PASSING. Her literary works put her in the midst of a new literary movement which became known as the #HarlemRenaissance. However; we salute her unsung service to the Public Library System and her efforts with Ernestine Rose and Regina Anderson to create an exciting literary environment at the library. Nella Larsen An American novelist during the Harlem Renaissance period who wrote the two famous novels called Quicksand and Passing. I learned about her and her novels just a few months ago. I was moved by her stories and her courage to share her struggles and success. Even though it’s been a century ago, there are still mixed raced individuals who don’t know where and how exactly they fit in the society. Reality just hit me when I realised that there’s always going to be conflicts in race, class, sexuality, etc., no matter how long it’s been. It might not ever go away, but we definitely coming a long way..
