The gym reeked of sweat and hardwood, the sound of squeaking sneakers and basketballs bouncing filling the space. I walked in with my duffle bag slung over my shoulder, trying to look confident, but inside, I was shitting bricks. My first practice with Rod Wave Elite, and I already felt like I didn't belong.
"Yo, Brianna, over here!" Cam shouted from the sideline. He was standing next to Nelson, who was casually dribbling a ball between his legs like he owned the place. As soon as our eyes met, my cheeks started heating up. Goddammit, Brianna, get it together. You're here to play ball, not fall for some curly-headed boy.
"Glad you made it," Cam said, tossing me a practice jersey with RWE printed across the front. "This is your squad now. Nelson's gonna help you get settled. He's one of my best players, so don't fuck around.""Yeah, no pressure or anything," Nelson said with a cocky grin, spinning the ball on one finger like a show-off.
"Thanks," I mumbled, slipping the jersey on over my crop top.Cam clapped his hands to get everyone's attention. "Alright, listen the fuck up! We're running drills today. New girl, Brianna, is gonna show y'all how she shoots crazy shit. Don't go easy on her, though. She can handle it."A wave of murmurs spread through the team, and I could feel their eyes on me. Nelson handed me a ball, his gaze steady.
"Ready to prove you're not all talk?"I smirked. "Ready to make you eat your words.""Thats what she said... about my dick" Nelson said with a small giggle. I somewhat thought it was funny but I didnt laugh cause it would give him ego. All i say is "You took that TOO far"

For the next hour, we went hard. Layup lines, shooting drills, defensive sets-you name it. My legs were burning, but I didn't stop. Every now and then, I'd catch Nelson watching me. He was smooth as hell on the court-quick, precise, like he had a sixth sense for the game. It was hard not to watch him back, but I forced myself to focus.
During a one-on-one drill, Nelson and I got matched up. "Let's see if you're as good as Cam says," he said, his voice dripping with that cocky attitude."Oh, I'm better," I shot back, hitting him with a crossover so clean it left him stumbling. I pulled up for a jumper, and the ball swished through the net.The gym erupted with shouts and laughter.
Cam let out a loud whistle from the sideline. "Holy shit, Brianna! That's what I'm fucking talking about!"Nelson shook his head, laughing as he jogged over. "Alright, you got me. Don't let it go to your head, though.""Too late," I said, walking past him with a grin.

After practice, Cam gathered everyone around for a quick debrief. "Good shit today, y'all. Brianna, you're already looking like a solid addition. Keep that same energy, alright?""Thanks, Coach," I said, my confidence starting to grow.
As I packed up my stuff, Nelson walked over, hands in his pockets. "You did good out there. Surprised the fuck outta me.""Thanks. You weren't too bad yourself," I said, trying to sound nonchalant, even though my heart was pounding.He chuckled.
"Wanna grab some food? A few of us are hitting this burger joint down the street. It's pretty chill."My heart skipped a beat. Was this an invite?
"Uh, yeah, sure. Sounds cool." "Cool," he said, flashing that goddamn smile of his before walking off to join the others.I stood there for a moment, trying to process what just happened.
One practice down, and I was already getting invited to hang out with the team-by Nelson, no less.Maybe this Rod Wave Elite thing was gonna be more than just basketball.
