Tangled the Series Discourse Warning

Against my better judgement, I’ve decided to make my stance a bit more clear when it comes to the discourse directly relating to how Cassandra was written in S3. Even though this is inspired by things that I’ve seen on the dash, it’s in no way intended to be an attack on any person in particular. Just something that I personally wanted to get off my chest and maybe offer a viewpoint that might be interesting.

To start things out, up until S3, Cass was and honestly still is my favorite character in the series. I found her bluntness and wit personally pretty charming and I adored most of the bickering between her and Eugene. Admittedly her clashes with Rapunzel were getting to the point that felt repetitive halfway through season two (and was disappointed that she and Eugene just stopped having a fun dynamic with only taking pot shots at each other), and I honestly wondered why they were friends at times, but that only made me more interested in where their story was taking them. Heck, I was hyped when Cass took the stone during the S2 finale and couldn’t wait to see how the rest of the story played out.

To say that I was disappointed by how Cassandra’s arc ultimately played out is a severe understatement. As much as I wanted to give the benefit of doubt, I couldn’t deny that a lot of the charm and wit that I grew to love about Cass was largely absent in S3, only to be replaced by having her rudeness and violence turned up to eleven. As someone who likes a lot of characters who are rude and sarcastic, I just found Cassandra way too sadistic and irrational enjoy anymore, let alone sympathize with.

For a time, I tried to theorize to myself why the same character who was paranoid about anybody remotely suspicious is now just blindly trusting this ghost girl she found in a suspicious house. I tried to make a mindset that could explain why she thought she was in anyway justified in trying to “break Rapunzel’s spirit” other than just destiny BS. I tried to understand why she would outright blame a literal baby for “stealing” her mom when her mother is the one to kidnap said baby and abandon Cass.

However, what broke Cassandra beyond repair to me is the mindtrap. How could someone whose arc is supposedly about wanting her own destiny and choices think that she is in anyway justified in literally mind controlling people? Why does she think she deserve these unwilling soldiers when she doesn’t even have any excuses of declaring war on Corona in the first place? What exactly did Corona ever do to her? Just because Rapunzel is the princess, that doesn’t mean her people deserve to be dragged into her personal beef with her ex bestie. The worse Hector an Adria did to Cass was be randomly rude about her former profession (that I still don’t really understand how they could know about) and accept the fight that Cass tossed at them and outmatched her. Edmund was just trying to guard the moonstone from causing more harm, and Quirin literally did nothing to Cassandra. They are all just bystanders to Cassandra’s unexplainable desire for power purely for the sake of power.

So yeah, Race to the Spire killed any hope of me being satisfied with Cassandra’s arc, but I figured I can just turn off my brain to that plot point and keep going since it was almost over. It couldn’t possibly make it any worse than it already was, right? Nope, because two more episodes decided to twist the knife even more by stealing away all of Cass’ common sense and brain cells. I mean, of course, Tales of Two Sisters, and Once a Handmaiden. Now, I have lots of problems with both of these episodes, but for the sake of this post not being as long as a novel, I’ll only address Once a Handmaiden because this episode is the fuel of the drama I saw on my dash today.

How can a adult woman who was raised by a man heavily in law enforcement not even realize that multiple counts of murder, a count of kidnapping (and assault), threatening war against a whole kingdom, and literal mind control would make her not the “bad guy?” How did Cass be reduced to the point that back in S1 she decided that her father was abusing his power to stack the deck against Eugene in his guard test and encouraged him to play dirty back, but now she doesn’t realize that her actions made Corona justified in making countermeasures against her. She was the one to lead the makeshift army to Varian’s house, so why is she so shocked that in outright attacking and threatening the kingdom wouldn’t get her face on a stinking wanted poster?

Why is a literal teenager who was pushed to the brink have more self awareness to his actions than an actual adult woman? It’s insulting, degrading, and just all around manipulative writing to suddenly have Cassandra be lost after going to the lengths she’s grown through up until that point. Cass is portrayed too gleefully sadistic for them to play the “omg, I’m the bad guy???” card in the second to last episode of the entire series. She has the brotherhood’s minds in her pocket, yet she only now realize she’s gone too far for not actual reason?

I can’t even blame it on her being irrationally emotional, because the show gives her moments to reconsider her actions, but even with those moments of clarity, she STILL closes to be the worst possible person she can be. They can’t have scenes with her not hurting Pascal be taken seriously when in just a couple episodes later she almost kills both him and Rapunzel in a cave filling with gas. I don’t feel bad about her looking conflicted because she still just walks away in the end and Pascal is the only reason why the two of them are alive. I don’t feel sympathy with her trying to make amends with the Gopher Grab because a) she still has the moonstone for no good reason b) she still has the mindtrap for no good reason c) she is sneaking around for no good reason because Rapunzel has never given her any reason to believe she wouldn’t accept her apology in a heartbeat. Like, even if we ignore the fact that Rapunzel isn’t the only one she hurt, Cass masquerading as Faith to aid in a useless festival doesn’t actually make up for anything she’s done to Rapunzel. It doesn’t make her less of a threat. It doesn’t erased the things she’s done. It doesn’t even make even hesitate in using the mindtrap by the end of the episode because apparently she just had it on standby mode.

It also doesn’t help Cassandra’s sympathy points by making the Amber gun completely ineffective against her. What right does she have to be mad at the people of Corona when even their best efforts can’t slow her down for even a few mintues? Why should she blame them for trying to have the means to defend themselves against the perso who has complete control over the rocks that has been a plague on there lands for at least over a year? What right did she have to destroy the captial and activate the mindtrap and later on turn two fathers against their own sons? No headcanons or even canon excuses in my opinion will ever make Cassandra sympathetic at this point. We can’t even blame ZT anymore since by this point, Cass has turned against her, so all the terrible actions Cass continues to commit in the finale is 100% her intentions, no manipulation. Even in the finale without ZT lackluster influence, Cass is still as disgusting violent anf sadistic as she’s been throughout S3 up until she “failed”, so pardon me for not buying that she isn’t at all sorry for her actions.

today i fought the giant enemy spider. not really but also yes

me and my parents visited a waterfall we usually go to. and the problem is that There were spiders everywhere. their webs were immense and i'm not even being dramatic. they were enormous too. so my dad was scaring me all the time by saying stuff like they were coming down or how there was one right behind me. i just screamed all the time there like my life depended on it. but after a while we went home so i was finally safe lol

on the way home, after my little Funky rocks i found in the river fell on my feet, my dad shouted "DID YOU TWO SEE THAT HUGE ASS SPIDER?" and i just went Haha funny didn't see anything while looking at the ground oops! because we were already far from the waterfall yet he was still using the spider scare on me

i thought that until he stopped the car and turned around while telling us we had to see it.

he told us it was crossing the road and where he saw it. he approached it slowly. my mom saw it first because i'm blind like a mole. then he got closer and closer. we had to drive past it because there was a car behind us, and it looked small really, then he turned around again so we could stop the car and go see it. he approached it slowly again and stopped where we could clearly see it.

right???????????????anyways i ran out of the car with my phone and took pictures of it while it was like 40 or 30cm away from my feet.

literally barged out with my camera app in hand and started taking pictures like it was a celebrity, and since i'm some lucky fuck, even when i walked around it, it didn't mind me, just making its way downtown, walking fast. probably a peaceful species, which is a blessing for me to run into while living in south america. i even put my phone back in my pocket and stared down at it. it was probably the size of my hand. i didn't touch it with hands or ANYTHING at all because i know their little hairs are very sensitive, so it could just bolt at any point if i annoyed it or made it scared. we watched out for cars until it was safe inside the forest.

and that's it. after i went back to the car i almost had a fucking heart attack while realizing what the fuck i had just done. i am stupid and crazy and i simply act on impulse.

Why don't you like anna and the french kiss?

My answer will be full of spoilers, so if you want to read the book and you don’t want to get spoiled, don’t continue reading.

Okay, when I first starting getting into reading, which was like two or three years ago, I watched a lot of booktube videos for recommendations and every single person I watched a video of raved about this book and the trilogy in general. They claimed that it was one of the cutest books they’ve read so I, a fluff enthusiast, decided to give it a shot. Instead of having a good time, though, and dying from all the cutesy content I was promised, I finished this book feeling extremely frustrated. 

Now, when I first read that book I gave it 3 stars on Goodreads because I just wanted to move on with my life and forget about this book (and also, I might have been kind of afraid to express an unpopular opinion). But as the days went by, I couldn’t stop thinking about this book and how awful I thought it was and the more I thought about it, the more angry and frustrated I got with it. So I decided to drop the rating down to a 1 star, but if Goodreads had a “zero stars, made me want to scratch my eyes off” rating, that’s what its appropriate rating would be and that’s for the following reasons:

The characters. I’ll focus on the two main characters later, but for now let’s talk about the secondary and background characters. All of them, without exception, in my opinion were cardboard cutouts of people who had like, one defining personality trait and most of whom served only one purpose: making the main character look like she’s the best human being on earth. Now, you might be thinking that typically characters like that are pretty neutral or whatever but I hated every single one of them. Ten out of them, would stab all of them.

Anna. She is the typical innocent girl, who ,of course, is different from the rest of the girls, which she wants to remind us 24/7 by talking about how she wants to be the best female film critic and by telling us all the quirky things she does, like going to the cinema 10 times a week when she can’t really afford food. In my entire life, in all the books I’ve read, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more stupid and ignorant character. Like, bitch goes to France, the capital of all things art and especially film, which is supposedly her biggest passion, and she doesn’t think that they’d be cinemas there? And when she has this epiphany that places other than America have movie theaters, she decides to watch only American, modern films. Like, sure Jan, you’re going to be the best film critic. Also, this dumb bitch goes to an English speaking school and she’s too afraid to order from the cafeteria because she thinks that they only speak French there. As I said at the beginning of this paragraph, she’s supposed to be this innocent angel who does no wrong, but later on we see her hating on and badmouthing every single person she doesn’t like, betray her friends and describing beating her crush’s girldfriend in way too much detail.

Etienne. He’s supposed to be the local hottie, the best looking guy in the school and the guy that every girl with eyes wants to have. In reality, though, he’s the biggest fucking asshole you’ll ever meet. He is constantly flirting with Anna, even though he has a girlfriend. He is two timing Anna and his girlfriend, Ellie, for almost the entire book but nobody calls him out on his fucking bullshit because he’s such a cutie! Why are all the girls in love with such a fucking huge piece of shit? He is a pretentious douchebag who keeps seeing Anna even though he has no plans on breaking up with his girlfriend anytime soon. 

Cheating. From what you’ve read above it is pretty clear that Etienne is emotionally (and I believe physically, too, because I think that him and Anna kiss while he’s still technically with Ellie, but I might be wrong) and nowhere in the book is there any conversation about this, except for when Anna thinks that what she’s doing is wrong from like two seconds, but then she continues doing it anyway. 

Girls hating on other girls. This book, man. I am sick and tired of seeing this “trope” and this book is filled with nothing but. Anna, this pure sweet girl, is constantly putting down other girls, just because they’re interested on the same guy she likes or they’re dating her ex boyfriends. She doesn’t stop calling other girls slutty and skanky, she keeps criticizing what they’re wearing and that doesn’t stop to girls she doesn’t really know, but she feels the need to talk shit on Meredith, who is supposed to be her friend. Like, fuck off. She’s always badmouthing Ellie, even though she’s done nothing wrong to her? Oh yes, how dare the girlfriend of the guy I like be in a relationship with him???? 

The hypocrisy. As mentioned above, Anna always talks down on other girls because she’s much better than them, when in reality she does the exact same shit. She claims that all the girls who like Etienne push their boobs and butts out so he’d pay attention to them, when she, queen of hypocrisy, grinds on him, shares a bed with him three times and is constantly flirting and going on dates with him. Also, while she’s flirting hardcore with Etienne, Anna is supposed to be liking this Christopher guy, who she has barely spoken to since going to France, but she expects him to wait for her. She later on discovers that her bestie from back home is dating the guy she supposedly likes and gets very angry, and I’ll give her that because what her friend did was fucked, but then she proceeds to do the same to her friend Meredith, who she knows really likes Etienne. What an amazing friend.

The message. I am a firm believer that books don’t necessarily need to have a meaning or that they need to include a life lesson at the end. Some books exist just to be a fun read and I think that’s what this book was trying to do, but instead we got a message that was very wrong and fucked up. Basically, it’s okay to emotionally cheat on people, admit to the girl that you fancy that you prefer her more than your actual girlfriend and you’d much rather be with her, continue playing with people’s feelings, hurt others but at the end it’s all good because all of that doesn’t matter and you get to live happily ever after with the girl you cheated on your girlfriend with. A lot of people think that this is okay but it’s not because cheating is never excused, no matter how much of a bitch you think his girlfriend is, no matter how much you ship those people and how cute you think they are. Oh, and about Anna and Etienne’s relationship. The author is clearly using the entire cheating thing to give the whole situation an angsty vibe when in reality this entire relationship is tale and boring. Another message that this book puts out to the world is that it’s okay to hate on people because they stand in the way of what you want and it’s alright to be thinking about hurting and ridiculing them. The author, through this book, makes people stand by Anna and support her bad behavior, even though in the process many people are getting hurt.
