Much like the films that inspired it, Night Caller is gleefully distasteful; there is not a speck of originality, which is entirely the point.
As a parodic neo-giallo made in the throwback mould, Night Caller taps into the trashier end of the genre and brings with it all of the sloppy trappings and visceral gore that you might expect. If we could unite the two directors of The Strange Colour of Your Body’s Tears’ sublime, inventive visual storytelling with an actual integrated, interesting mystery full of genuine characters one day, that’d be the best giallo since Suspiria. Better than Argento, probably. Better than Bava. But they write their own stuff, which explains a lot.
