Intro to India - “The World is Waiting” Sounds From Psychedelphia 1998
It’s probably not something most people know about, not even most locals, but Philadelphia and its surrounding suburbs had a fantastic, small, tight-knit neo-psychedelic / shoegaze / indie rock scene from the mid-90s to the early 2000s. The scene was labelled Psychedelphia. Little-known bands like The Asteroid #4, Slumber, Lenola, and Bent Leg Fatima rocked stages together blasting hazy post-rockian shoegaze and fringy experimentalism. The scene’s bands have been chonricled chronicled in two compilation CDs: 1996′s Sounds From The Philadelphia Low Orbit Lounge and 1998′s Sounds From Psychedelphia. Intro to Indie has a track on the latter.
Intro to India didn’t last long. Helmed by EJ Hagen and Alex White, the band released a single EP in 1998 and “The World Is Waiting” was made for Sounds From Psychedelphia in the same year. This appears to have been the band’s entire output. Hagen and White would go on to start Highspire, a band with a similar sound, in the early 2000s. The two have hinted that they think of Intro to India as a prequel iteration of Highspire.
Intro to India draws inspiration from 80s and 90s bands from across the pond such as The Stone Roses, Radiohead, and My Bloody Valentine, to construct American shoegazey greatness. Walls of reverbed, distorted strumming and along with a plodding drumbeat act as a foundation as lazy electric guitar jangles play lead. The band delivers calm and soothing, almost unintelligible, vocals that dreamily blend in with the instruments. At the end, the song devolves into a downtempo, experimental electronic sound laid over a distorted, snare-heavy drum break.
A post-rock lullaby for 90s indie kids.
