As someone who was always weary and annoyed at how much ppl focused on shipping throughout the years, I can definitely say hajime and nagito feel Different.
I don't necessarily ship them- like as strongly as some might -but just in this short time, I've seen a lot of depth and attention to dynamic in this ship than I usually see with really popular ships (and with a lot of shipping in general). It was probably way worse back in the series' peak popularity, but that at least tells me that those who stuck around and/or the new fans, are people who can appreciate them both as characters and a ship.
There's still ppl who sort of only think of the ship and seem to ignore them as individuals, but I've found that's usually the ship heavy blogs anyways. The same people who have 23843 ships and seem to enjoy the idea of pairing more than who it is they are pairing. Which I mean I guess isn't bad but it's lame--sdjfnsdjfb.
But yeah no I'm ngl if I saw how adamant and weird ppl were abt ships (not even just komahina but esp them) I probably would not be nearly as chill abt DR shipping because I would have had flashbacks to like every other fandom I've seen, plus just wouldn't have related to the over excitement. Wouldn't have the words to say why I don't like seeing it etc etc. Reason #2531 why I am glad I got into the series later on in it's calmer state.
