JoanOvArk/Haxan/Neon Creatures Live @ The Iron Road, Pershore
Yep, an almost total fem fatale feast at Pershore’s Iron Road, ok, Neon Critters, have a trio of road men on drums, bass and lead guitar, but otherwise, girl power all the way.
Evesham’s Neon Creatures, delivered their soft rock, Andy doing sterling work on his Ibanez axe, whilst Andre beats the drum for vocalist, Louisa. They blitzed through there set, culminating in there upbeat, ‘Get It Right This Time’ and ‘Gone To Ground’, before clearing the way for the more metal beating Haxan.
Haxan, drawn from the steel mills of South Wales, and er… Cheltenham, are 3 leather clad girls who like to wield their guitars threateningly and lash us with their long statically charged tresses. Sam on lead and vocals, defies her petite stature, punching out her rock lyrics, Harriet, tosses her hair, struts and provokes, with her bass, whilst in the shadows, Jess drums up encouragement. Both support bands had enthusiastic support from the crowded Iron Road, leaving me to dodge and weave through the riveted fans.
JoanOvArk have an implied name invoking the heroic stand of the French heroine, Ellie fires up the drums, beating out the call to war, guitars shred the air. The feline Keira swings her bass, these. ‘Girls Wanna Rock’, their thunderous anthem fills the air. Laura on lead vocals threatens with her Gibson Flying V, Shelley is cutting a swathe through the massed hordes below, the leather clad slayer cuts the air with her axe. They have a new album to tout and ‘Down By The River’, is drawn from that well, a rock ballad, that stands like a fortress over the swollen waters of the Avon, Ellie is whipping up the current, sticks a blur, but always a smile on her face. Their first album spawned. ‘White Trash’, which pumped into life with pounding drums, thunderous bass, and soaring riffs, charging the atmosphere.
The band line has changed a little with the release of the new album, notably in the rhythm section, with Ellie and Keira stepping in. ‘People Coming Up’ is destined to be a crowd pleaser at this summers festival, whoahwhaohwhoa, calls for the crowd to respond, certainly worked here, as the band fans the flames, they have all the moves, the pizazz and front you could want, and gang of followers before them are putty in their collective hands. ‘Jane’, bubbles and pops, an arguably more commercial sound, but full of driving drum and bass, and Shelley’s guitar riffs, Spice Girls? Who were they? THIS IS A GIRL BAND! Keira sets up the base on her Rickenbacker, as the girls swing into, ‘Slipping Away’, also from the new self titled JoanOvArk album. The evening draws towards its electrifying close, Shelley and Keira are down amidst the fans, ‘Free Bird’,takes to the air, as the sizzling girl power evening at The Iron Road, extinguishes like a disposed cigarette, on the floor of the pit.
