Here are sketches of some new fruit citizens. These 5 and one more will mark the official completion of the main f.c. cast, save for a few side/secret characters.
Starting off with the rambutan (nephelium lappaceum), one of them was overripe and got very vinegary in both smell and taste and brown in colour, shown in the left picture below this paragraph, but luckily the rest were fine. These are always fun to cut open, revealing the smooth fruit inside. One of us thought they resembled chestnuts, the other was more reminded of peeling a babybell cheese. They're very mild and lychee (litchi chinensis) esque, mixed with (white) grape and notes of honey. The texture is both soft and firm. Inside is a seed, of which the outer layer sticks to the fruit. The seed itself has a mellow almond flavour, we didn't eat them, but they are edible when roasted.
The qiuyue pear (pyrus pyrifolia 'qiuyue') was pretty unique as well! They're juicy, with a grainy texture. That probably sounds unpleasant, but it's not at all! Flavour-wise they're mildly sweet, kind of like a pear ice lolly and they have this gardencress-like flavour to them. Once again, sounds a bit weird, but it really was nice! Just a little perfumed and herbal. Its skin is really thick and rough, we ended up peeling the pear because we didn't really like the texture it added.
Qiuyue pears are apparently also eaten cooked and I'm curious to see how that would affect both texture and flavour. All in all a really fun fruit taste test! I had already tried rambutan before, but the qiuyue pear is completely new to me! (Other mod ->) It was my first time trying rambutan and I think it's one of my new favourite fruits :) Absolutely adored it, but I'm a big lychee head so that was to be expected.
Redan
(nephelium maingayi)
Also known as nude rambutan, hairless rambutan, serait, mujau or buah sungkit
A member of the soapberry family, closely related to rambutan and lychee, it also has edible flesh which encases the large seed inside. The species was once thought to be extinct due to deforestation in Sumatra and Kalimantan. It's still fairly rare today, but its fruit can sometimes be found being sold at rural markets. It's said to have a lot of commercial potential with the fruits having a similar flavour to that of lychee.
