Rubus
some cute salmonberry flowers. 3.26.25
Plant of the Day
Wednesday 19 November 2025
The striking, deeply veined green palmate leaves of Rubus lineatus (silky-leaved bramble) have a silvering on the underside. This is a semi-evergreen suckering shrub which can reach up to 3m in height. It thrives in a well-drained, moderately fertile soil in a warm sheltered position.

So, really cool find at Lacamas Regional Park while leading a native plant tour for the Portland Chapter of the Native Plant Society! We discovered a thicket of salmonberry that had numerous fasciated flowers. Five petals is normal, but these often had around twenty.
Fasciation happens when meristem, or growth, cells in plants suffer hormonal imbalances; these can be caused by genetic mutations, or external factors like diseases. The affected salmonberry bushes may have a common ancestor with the genetic mutation, or they may have all caught the same contagious disease.
…in the countryside you can find delicious fruits… autumn offers many things to the eye but also to the palate…
