Being called a coward was the least of Zoisite’s current problems. He needed the Black Crystal, which Nephrite had. The longer it took him to get it, the more likely something would go wrong. Nephrite was turning traitor: something he had noticed happening and dreading since the interference of this girl. And now there was the issue of a sword put between them.
“You really think I will believe that you are willing to give up perhaps the greatest asset you have simply to save one insignificant civilian?” Do not show your hand. Do not let him know you are scheming.
Zoisite’s green eyes flitted between the black crystal and Naru, who stood half-behind Nephrite, shaking and cowering like the child she was. He needed to get rid of them both. Nephrite, at the least.
“Nephrite, really, you’ve grown soft. It disgusts me.” He shook his head, copper curls swaying. “I must admit there is some charm to it... but really, to sink so low. Have you no shame in betraying your band of brothers? Or are you simply wishing to one-up Jadeite’s idiocy?
“I cannot take the crystal and leave you alive if this is the choice you wish to make, Nephrite. So my new offer: I will let the girl live-” Lie. “-and in exchange, you will come with me, with the crystal, back to Beryl. Let her dispense your judgment. I assure you, she will be far more merciful than I.”
