Gilda swung her legs out over the ledge of her window. The skirt she wore fluttered around her ankles and it suddenly occurred to her that she probably should’ve changed clothes before this. Smiling wryly, she climbed down the castle wall anyway.
There wasn’t any time to waste-- she had to make every second count. Gilda hiked up her skirt and ran across the yard, toward her destination: a small shack, tucked away in the woods next to a trickling stream. She passed several royal guards on her way out of the palace grounds, but she stealthily avoided them all.
For once, her short, petite, and all-around-unextraordinary form was good for something.
By the time she was standing at the door, her clothes were covered in mud and leaves. Her hands were also shaking, but it was too late to turn back now that she was already here, and besides, for once she was more excited than nervous. So maybe her shaking hands were a good thing.
After taking a deep breath, Gilda knocked on the door, and spoke.
“Mister René, sir? Are you in? I’ve come to pay you another visit, if you would be so kind as to have me.”
