I've been rewatching Clone Wars and Rebels and honestly both of those shows do something so interesting with Maul in that whenever he loses - not just runs away after a skirmish, but really climactic defeats - it doesn't feel like a victory? In a way, he's almost framed as another guy we should be rooting for.
And I honestly think it's because whenever Maul loses, everybody else loses too.
He's defeated in The Phantom Menace - but Qui-Gon is dead and we know Obi-Wan will fail in training Anakin.
When Sidious defeats him in The Lawless, even though Maul has just killed Satine, the episode still ends on a somber note - peace on Mandalore has been destroyed, and Maul himself is suffering at the hands of a greater evil and the man who has abused him his whole life
Ahsoka defeats him in the finale - and the last chance of preventing order 66 is defeated too
He's defeated on Malachor in Rebels - but Kanan is blinded, Ahsoka is gone, and Ezra will never be the same.
It's almost like if Maul hasn't won, no one else wins either XD
And ironically, Maul's final "defeat" is actually a pretty victorious moment for him - because, against everything Sidious raised him to be, he finally found hope and arguably even peace. The moment of his true death, while still sad, is also very gentle and hopeful, full of Obi-Wan's mercy, and does not really feel like a defeat. Hope and the final defeat of Sidious is at hand.
Anyway I have so many thoughts about this
You know what my worst part about getting old is? My own personal pain with the passage of time?
It is being a fandom elder and knowing so much fandom content is gone forever; blogs deleted, channels taken down, posts erased, that newer fans will never get to experience and my fellow elders don't even remember that something is missing. It breaks my heart knowing there were these beautiful works that inspired me and others that only continue to exist in slowly fading memories until the day that even there they will disappear as well.
Appreciate your fellow fandom creators, artists please don't delete your old art even if you find your old style cringe or lost your love of a particular fandom. You will never know if that scrap you erased wasn't a precious memory to someone else.
Okay so fair warning this post contains both spoilers about everyones favourite priest and a liberal dusting of speculation because I don't know all the facts just yet. I'll try to keep it as light as I can on the spoiler front but there is one or two big ones in here from his dates so read at your own risk.
One of the first things I noticed about Lyon when I got his Gemini skin and had a proper chance get a good look at him is he has Polycoria- multiple irises and pupils (Just like my Operator and Drifter) and I have a theory as to why the serum did that to him.
The obvious part is Lyon has the Harrow strain and base Harrow has two optics on the right side of his face. There are two main ways this desgin could've been translated to him as a protoframe. 1. give him actual multiple eyes on the right side of his face (biblically acurate angel style) or 2. A more subtle way to do it which they did here was to give him Polycoria. One eye, 2 irises/pupils in this case to reflect his batch, which is a really neat design detail.
Now here's where the speculation part comes in what if Lyon has Polycoria not just because he's Harrow but because he literally has one eye here in the present and one "eye" that sees into in the void? It's a very nice bit of subtle visual storytelling if thats actually the reason. (Which I doubt) Also a bit of a potential nod towards the dualism of Sol and Lua. And the many aspects of each and how they tie in to Lyons powers and personality
Lyon has "visions" from the void and doesn't appear to experience time in the same way we do. If you wanna get technical about it they're not exactly visions in the traditional sense they're more akin to psychic imprints courtesy of the void from what was said in one of his dates.
He can see imprints of the past, what's happening presently in his anchored time point, potentially the future and whatever hinky shit the void tosses out. It all just runs together for him because of his time spent with Rell and the original Harrow holding vigil beside them, time was timeless in that place. Lyon has his proveribal 3rd eye wrenched open by the void which is why the poor thing gets debilitating migranes from experiencing everything happening at the same time.
Speculation and spoilers aside though I do like the aspects of visual storytelling in Lyons design as well as the little nods to the stories about Sol and Lua he tells us which seem to shape some aspects of his personality and design.
If you've made it this far thank you for coming to my ted talk. I tried very hard not to the the audhd derail me too badly- (I don't think I quite succeeded but here we are.)
I miss when Call of Duty wasn't afraid to depict war in a realistic way, showing how brutal it can be, but also letting the player decide at the end how they ultimately feel about the overall experience. Call of Duty: World at War (2008) starts with you and your squad mates getting captured and then tortured by Japanese soldiers, it's filled with scenes like this to remind you of the harsh realities of war. It didn't decide for you how you should think, it just let you sit in it and experience it for yourself. They weren't afraid to shy away from certain topics, and often made connections to real world events that actually happened. Now most Call of Duty games just feel like military propaganda trying to convince you of how "cool" and "epic" being in the military is. The contrast from the grittiness and despair from the horrors of war in World at War to the overly bombastic and naively hopeful tone of Call of Duty: World War 2 is a great example of modern Call of Duty leaning more towards a male power fantasy that's solely focused on the spectacles of war, which feels more akin to an action movie than a real look at real world history. There was just something so special about the "golden age" era Call of Duty campaigns that felt grounded in a sense, and that's missing from the newer games
shows just do NOT get better than Brooklyn nine-nine. the peak has been reached and now everyone trying to catch up just looks like a pussy next to it
btw, can u guess who I am? (I'm the anon from earlier, if it wasn't obvious) Also rant to me about Transformers or something, but in a way my non-Transformer brain can understand pls
thank you, oooooh get ready.
transformers rant under the cut!!! spoilers for tf stuff ahead
RRRGHHHHHH NO. YOU DONT GET IT!!!!
i get projecting your identity on characters, I do that too.
BUT THAT ISNT WHAT THE STORY IS ABOUT!!! THAT ISNT WHAT HER CHARACTER IS ABOUT!!!!!
its about her adapting to survive, and over time she becomes wild, as that is the only way she'll survive. this also leads her to become more animalistic, since animals know how to survive in the wild.
HER ENTIRE THING IS LEARNING!!! she is learning how to survive, and to survive, she has to become more than she was programmed to be.
im assuming that the og poster hasn't read the books, which goes a lot more in depth then the movie.
also the og poster is kind of saying it as a fact rather than a headcannon.
JUST BECAUSE SHES HUMANOID-ISH AND HAS A CONNECTION WITH THE ANIMALS AND ACTS LIKE AN ANIMAL SOMETIMES DOES NOT MEAN SHE A THERIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(this post was made madly/annoyed and OP doesn't really want to discuss it. also this is a mini nerd-ramble)
