So, as part of our attempts to take a little break when we can, Kris and I have been going to this fish'n chips place near my parent's for lunch one day a week before going to my grandma's. The food is great, prices and portions are also desirable...but the service is... well... boogers.
First off, we've had the same waitress each time we've gone there. Kris orders a Coke/Pepsi each time, and the waitress looks at her, makes a weird face, and asks "Diet?" Now...this has happened each time we've gone there, and the way she asks it definitely comes off as "You're fat and you're at an all you can eat fish'n chips place, maybe you should get diet even though you hadn't specified that's what you wanted."
Secondly, she's somehow managed to screw up my drink order each and every single time we've gone, from bringing just water instead of iced tea, to not refilling my drink until we've already had our left overs packed up (oh yeah, that's another thing, but I'll get to it soon!), to bringing me a glass of root beer and saying "here is your iced tea!" proudly, then chiding me on having drank it all so she couldn't tell what it was she was supposed to refill my glass with... when it took her fifteen minutes to notice my glass was empty (so of course I sipped every last drop!). Each time I've gotten a refill, she's had to come back to ask again what I ordered.
Thirdly, we asked for a full order of onion rings when we went with my dad, and she brought us a plate with three onion rings on it. I had never realized that one ring per person is considered a full order. Then when we brought it up to her, she brought us a second half order of rings (and charged us for two half orders instead of a full order...so it cost us more). Last time we went, we asked for a half order and she brought us a full order... but we were just too used to how she does things to bother complaining.
Fourthly, even though we've always ordered all you can eat, neither of us have managed to finish our first plate. So, since we tend to have one to three left over pieces of fish, fries, and a few onion rings when we're ready to leave, we ask to get it packed up. Each time she's made funny faces at us, as if genuinely wrestling with our requests but trying to make us feel either bad or amused by it, and each time she's had to go ask her boss or one of the cooks. Each time she's been told (and after the first time we've told her) that if it's our first serving then they have no problem packing up our leftovers for us. It's a rule we completely respect, keeping people from ordering an extra plate just to take home and it ending up costing them a lot of extra money. "I never know!" She always tells us, but... it seems like a pretty basic common sense thing to know about your job, especially if ti's come up each time we've been there, and while she does screw up so many other things, she does remember us.
Also, this past time, she made a comment to/about my wife. "Oh, she's hungry today!" when she saw that Kris wanted to nearly clear her plate this time. Right next to us were a couple of "not fat" people scarfing down platefuls, but they don't get comments like that... but us fat people do apparently.
None of the times we've gone, has there been more than two, maybe three other tables with people at them...and there are probably twenty or so tables there... so it's not like she can claim her slow, offensive, error filled service is due to things being too busy or her being new to the job. Even if our first time there was her first day, it's been a month... these are pretty basic things to have learned in a month. We try to give her the benefit of the doubt and just shrug things off and accept the service we've gotten as how things are, but when ever we've done that, she's managed to take it a level further and we're just... dumbstruck!
That said, we still love the place, and are loathe to leave, because like I already said, the food, portions, and price are all great, and it's on the way to my grandma's! We need nice little treats like this.
EDIT: Oh yeah! I forgot to mention how she brought me a glass full of ice when I asked for water, then she stared and blinked at me like I was crazy when I politely reminded her that I had asked for water. Aside from double checking to make sure Kris didn't really want diet Coke, this was the first thing that raised warning flags.
