Nereiden by Eduard Veith (1856 - 1925)
here’s my sapient amphibian cuttlefish aliens that i love and adore, the Nereiden (singular Nereida)
they communicate partially by flashing patterns and colors across their skin and partially through tactile sign language
to breed they move from the shallow seas in which they spend most of their time to inland ponds and inlets which requires concentrating the siliceous spicules within their tissues into the limbs in order to give their bodies more rigidity for walking on land, as well as preparing the other organs and tissues for the transition to fresher water and air. They carry several dozen eggs encased in a mucus shell (like a precious gelatinous football) next to the belly with their middle arms and travel over land to the nursery pools where the eggs will grow and develop
