Manuscript Illumination with Scenes of Easter in an Initial A, from an Antiphonary

Nerius Italian, Bolognese

ca. 1320

"Nerius' name is known from his signature on a legal manuscript, for which Bologna, with its great university, was renowned. This example of his work, however, was created for a community of Augustinian monks. The scene weaves the accounts of two Gospels. Following Mark, the women approach the tomb of Jesus to anoint his body but find an angel at his empty tomb. According to Matthew's report of what happened to two holy women on Easter Sunday, they meet Jesus as they leave."

Illumination with Scenes of Easter - Manuscripts (5/?)

Contained in a letter A, this illumination displays scenes of Easter. On the top of the illumination, the holy women come to the tomb of Jezus and find an angle there. Below, they meet the resurrected Jezus who appears to them first of all.

This beautiful illumination comes from an Antiphonary, which is a liturgical book intended for use in choro (a liturgical choir). It dates back from ca. 1320 and was made in Bologna (Italy). The illumination was made by Nerius, a Bolognese artist.
