[In Nadiad (a historical town near Ahmedabad and Baroda)] the bathrooms had no running water and were semi-covered sheds. The toilets were outside, quite a long way away from the house and we had to wake each other to accompany us there at night. I remember hearing that the Muslims from UP and Bihar were mystified by our toilets - they had a water connection and low brick-lined compartments each of which had markers on which one could squat. After puzzling the matter for a while, they decided that these must be the kitchens of large families and I must say the thought of food being cooked in those quarters made us giggle.
