For the conversational Spanish fic, I'm trying to get an idea of what phrases would be helpful, like swear words, pet names or anything specific? Also do you know if Jaime's mom and dad were born in Mexico or in the US?
Oh! Well, in canon, Jaime never really swears beyond “dammit” (mostly because his mother is always around and doesn’t tolerate cursing on her home), but in the new 52 he swears by the Virgin a few times. He calls some people “pendejo” maybe once or twice. To the best of my knowledge, that’s the closest he’s come to using Spanish swear words in canon.Jaime himself doesn’t have pet names for anyone. He’s a teenage boy. He’s not very sentimental. However, Alberto and Bianca both call him “mijo” in the home. He calls Milagro names a lot but always in English.Overall, Jaime doesn’t really speak in Spanish very much! He’s by no means fluent; he mentions in one issue that he only has a B in his Spanish course. He speaks in Spanglish at home and completely in English everywhere else. The only times he is seen using Spanish is when he is extremely upset. For example, several times the Scarab refuses to retract the armor and in frustration Jaime yells, “¡Suéltame!” (I really like the usage of that phrase, by the way. It’s very vivid, and it’s easy for me to visualize the Scarab as a physical being, grasping Jaime). Another phrase that Jaime uses a lot is “No manches wey” which is and extremely colloquial Mexican expression; once again, he only uses it when he’s very upset, usually when he’s surprised or apalled by something. Only once do I recall Jaime speaking entirely in Spanish and that was when he was chewing out Booster Gold/Michael Carter in their fight, so once again, a high-stress, upsetting event.Only Jaime’s father was born in Mexico. Alberto is from Arroyo Blanco, Mexico and holds dual citizenship. Alberto’s mother, Jaime’s “abuela,” lives in New York. Bianca was born in the U.S., but speaks Spanish just as well as her husband. Both speak fluent English, but they speak primarily Spanglish in the home. The only exceptions to this are when Bianca gets very angry at La Dama and chews her out over the phone, and when Alberto calls his mother.Sorry this was so long. I hope it helped! I really look forward to reading your fic.
