rachel and tobias were THE starcrossed lovers of that period of middlegrade fiction
speaking of rachel, my god, they gave us a girl who was absolutely RUTHLESS, and applegate let her be. not without consequence, not without doubt, not without friction. but this was a book series for readers age 12+ and we have this bold, sometimes reckless badass girl who, as the series progresses, is down with literal murder and in fact does that, because war is war and these stories did not shy from the fact that fighting for survival sometimes means the other guy dies
i stopped reading before her death, but damn, that’s just. yet another thing. people look at those covers and think animorphs is complete nonsense but sure, whatever, it’s just a main character who’s been there since book one and she dies, permanently, lol how totally silly and cheesy.
