Don Jon (2013)

Pretty good flick. I didn’t know a lot about it other than he’s addicted to porn and there was a Scarlet Johansson relationship angle. I forgot Julianne Moore was even in it so that aspect, which turned out to be pretty major, at least equal to the Scarlet story if not more so, and it was good. Not just a lowbrow porn/bro comedy. It was really funny too. I enjoyed his confessionals and the VO in general. It’s not easy to get that right but he more or less nailed it here. A solid directorial debut and I hope JGL gets to do many more films.

Jack Reacher (2012)

Everything about the plot and dialog screams that it was adapted from a mediocre airport thriller. But tom Cruise manages to elevate it.  I enjoyed it, even if it was corny at time. Who cares? The plot was interesting, if a bit difficult to follow, and there was all sorts of badass moments like the bathroom fight or when Robert Duvall was just blindly shooting people.  I’d watch Jack Reacher 2 for sure, but like this one I wouldn’t mind waiting for it to appear on Netflix. Watched on 2/1 via Netflix

Beverly Hills Cop (1984)

I watched this because it’s supposed to be an 80s classic and I’ve never seen it.  It was pretty good, I guess.  It wasn’t what I was expecting, plot-wise.  I thought he would just be like the new hip black in your face cop in Beverly Hills.  But instead he’s an off-duty Detroit cop doing a private eye type thing.  Of course by the end he’s all buddy buddy with the Beverly Hills Cops, but he goes back to Detroit, only to presumably return 2 more times.  But I have no desire to watch the sequels.  I can see why this was such a huge hit 30 years ago, but now it just feels dated and played out, even if it was original in it’s time. Watched on 1/25 via Netflix

The Imposter (2012)

This is the most tense and creepiest documentary I’ve ever seen.  It’s up there with Dear Zachary in terms of how much it stuck with me.  I knew nothing of this case, I had never heard of it before or read anything.  Up until about halfway through this movie I wasn’t even sure it was real. And even know, how much can you really trust what eh says? His entire life is a lie, so how much of his part of the story can be true? The suggestion that the family killed their son is…interesting.  I don’t think that I’m on board with that, I think he was likely abducted and murdered, never to be found.  And that does some serious psychological damage to people.  So maybe they wanted him back so bad they were willing to lie to themselves?  Nothing about the way the family described the events makes me think they were hiding a murder.  And of course the suggestion that the dead brother (uncle?) is the one who did it casts some doubt, but that information comes from a guy who is very untrustworthy. All in all this is probably one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen.   Watched on 1/22 via Netflix

V/H/S/2 (2013)

It was alright.  Maybe a little better than the first one.  The frame story was dumb and I didn’t really get it.  As for the tapes, I liked the Zombie GoPro, interesting way to end it.  The eyeball camera one was ok, but I’m not big on ghost stories at all, so that was a big strike against it.  Slumber Party Alien Abduction was exactly that, and in that way I guess it succeeded, but it didn’t really do it for me.  And they killed the dog, boo. But then that Indonesian cult segment, holy balls that was awesome.  It was so crazy, my attitude while watching was basically “boring, ok this is interesting, awesome! Ok calm down, wow this is going really out there, holy shit ok I’m on board with this, LOVE IT!”  Really great short.   So I guess this was 2 for 4.  Solid enough that I’ll watch V/H/S 3 next year.  Maybe they’ll upgrade to D/V/D.
