A Classic Horror Story (Um Clássico Filme de Terror)

O dia de ouro pra Itália no atletismo nessas Olimpíadas sugeriu que eu visse este filme aqui que, como li por aí, parece uma mistura de O Segredo da Cabana com Midsommar. De fato vejo algumas semelhanças com ambos, com uma cena de arrepiar a alma como nenhum dos outros tem e um breve prólogo bem criativo.

PSA: Watch Jessica Jones

I’m sure this notice is entirely unnecessary for most of you, but you need to watch Jessica Jones on Netflix. It’s frickin’ awesome, and is far and away the best superhero-related piece of media I've ever watched. It’s also easily the most feminist TV series I've ever seen, and I mean that as a massive compliment. Jessica, while super-powered, is the opposite of a steely, unflinching badass - Jessica is surly, sarcastic, and irritable, allowed to show fear and trauma as well as strength and courage. In short, she’s a living, breathing and whole person. It’s the kind of complex female representation the TV landscape can only be enriched by.

The show is about her asserting herself on her own terms and overcoming the vile machinations of her past abuser, but it’s also about showing that Jessica is a survivor who is not defined by or responsible for the things she suffered. The show’s mantra is “It’s not your fault,” and that is unbelievably important. 

Tonally and in terms of its subject matter, it could hardly be more different from Jupiter Ascending. Nonetheless, I noted the following:

 - Krysten Ritter and Mila Kunis sound uncannily similar. I could genuinely close my ears and hear Jupiter rather than Jessica speaking. It was weird.

- Jupiter and Jessica both have freakishly muscular genetically altered boyfriends who are frequently shown shirtless in loving, sweaty close-ups.

- Jupiter and Jessica are both allowed to make mistakes and misjudge situations, and they’re never condemned or ridiculed for doing so.

- Jupiter and Jessica both get to face down their vile and deranged abusers alone on their own terms, and it’s immensely satisfying.

That’s pretty much where the similarities begin and end, but they were extremely gratifying similarities. Full marks.

Also, Jessica Jones’ showrunner (Melissa Rosenberg) and much of its behind-the-scenes talent - writers, directors, producers - are women. In short, it’s a show about a woman’s experience of heroism that’s heavily informed by female talent both on and off screen. That’s embarrassingly rare, and it’s be applauded. 

In short, awesome, awesome, awesome. We should all worship at the gracious altar of Netflix.
