The Earl of Surrey "Beholding the Fayre Geraldine in the Magic Mirror" by Edward Henry Сorbould
"The subject of Corbould's water-colour comes from Thomas Nashe's picturesque romance "The Unfortunate Traveller", which was published in 1594. A fictional character, Jack Wilton, is taken to Italy by the Earl of Surrey, a figure modelled on the real life Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey (?1517-47). In the story Nashe describes the Earl as being helplessly in love with the fair Lady Geraldine, daughter of the ninth Earl of Kildare, to whom he had addressed one of his sonnets. In the course of their travels Wilton and the Earl visit Henricus Cornelius Agrippa (1486-1535), a scholar and necromancer, in Nettesheim. Agrippa summons a vision of Lady Geraldine on a magic mirror that he keeps in his chamber. In Corbould's water-colour Surrey, wearing armour, is seen staring with amazement at the image of his paramour".
