Linux Network Manager issues, and some notes on what can be done.

(This works for Debian and Ubuntu. Fedora, Arch, and others, the process would be different. Also, this is for informational purposes. Alter your OS at your own risk.) 

For the longest time, on and off, I have been having trouble with a wired internet connection. Strange, because the wireless works fine. I believe I’ve written something about this, perhaps on this tumblr, before. I seemed to have had the issue fixed in different versions of Linux over the span of about a year or more, but never quite understood how I got things to work. I now think I understand it well enough to write something coherent....maybe. 

Basically, with my situation, it was the Network Manager software that comes with Linux that was not working well with my particular wireless router, I believe. The reason I believe this is because I was able remove the network manager, and directly connect to the internet. 

I will leave links that helped me fix this problem at the end of this post. But, basically, it is just changing the /etc/network/interfaces file by adding (as root) this: 

auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp

*Update: What I’ve discovered is this works, but only if I leave the Network Manager installed. It will simply give a message saying that the network is not managed.

Then I removed the network manager. But I wouldn’t attempt this unless the network manager isn’t seeing the internet on start up in the first place. 

*Update2: At this point, I would have to go out on a limb and say that Network Manager is junk. Was having the same connectivity problems, and switched to Wicd. That, and the suggestion above, seems to have solved the problem, but we shall see in the longer term.

*Update3 Hmm...it seems I had to take things a step farther and add a pre- up command. So, here is what seems to be working thus far with or without wicd or Network Manager:
