I have come across a major problem with LinkedIn outside of the weird creepy “people you may know” section or your boss or people you don’t want to contact you stalking your profile seeing what you are doing, these things have been very popular in the blogosphere lately. However, this is not the major sin of LinkedIn that I want to address.
The major sin of anyone who uses the social network are not the profile stalkers or creeps nor is it the people that crave as many connections as possible to make them feel like they are important. I am referring to the ones who add people as a connection only to add them to some sort of email list for their business. This (in my opinion) is the major sin of LinkedIn.
Newsletters and email blasts should be on an opt in basis. You should not be using LinkedIn to get as many contacts as possible to grow this email list of yours. If you were to ask me ahead of time to be added to your email list, perhaps I might be interested but it is the time you dare add me to your email list especially when it does not even apply to me that I get bothered and annoyed. That is just bad networking all together and you look like a complete social media douche for doing so.
What I suggest to you is that when you make a connection with someone you should reach out to the connection and create a relationship with this person. I know that many connections you truly do not know but you have them there for the “just in case” type situation when they might come in handy. If you were to establish a relationship with me through conversation then asked me to be a part of your email list I might really consider it. You could even just send me a link to your website and I can sign up there if I truly wanted to as well.
So to put it in simple terms……DO NOT USE YOUR LINKEDIN CONNECTIONS TO ADD TO YOUR EMAIL LIST! I think you get the point.
